Gotta. And, then would I suppose that the Buff Rock folks have to fight the fluff from perhaps the Orpington origins?

Orpingtons?

Buff cochins more than likely from my findings, there are a few strains(or used to be) of Buffs that were derived from multiple different make ups.

Orps(black; the first variety) were developed from Rocks and other breeds.

You are probably right Jeff. Who would ever mix in some Orpington to brighten up their Buff Rocks. Nah. That's pretty unlikely.

Well I don't know about unlikely most anything can likely happen, but I would say mixing in Buff Orpington would be more like non-typical though. I would go another route first off if I had to for what ever reason. The rocks have grown big enough in today's world of rocks + fighting the white feet/skin too, nah! I'll pass. Atleast with the Cochin blood you'd just be fighting the feathered feet for a spell and in both you'd still have the fluff to deal with IMO

ETA and yeah both are big too just thought I'd add that before some one else caught me on that one too, so yeah the Cochin blood would instill more size too, hey but you now what iId bet a lot of Buffs probly suffer the same issues as the party colors do, small in stature from folks procreating instead of breeding, now that one's a more than likely Huh?

Just wait till those Buffs of Cindy's get to coming on. I'd bet they are big and you wonder if they have had any Buff Cochin instilled in them in recent history, or by chance those fine buffs just happen to be from one of the masters of breeding Buff Cochins

It's all good, Jeff.

All I know is that I am paying attention to feathering fluff. I'd like to see tighter feathering on our birds. I've got some studying to do on just how best to accomplish it.
Your Barreds look to have tighter feathering than I've seen lately Fred. Your F1 girls (and boy you got rid of)

I definitely agree with you....some of the Barred lines, like the Maine Line Fred has, seems to be exceptionally "tight" in feather compared to other varieties

I posted an "experiment" I'm trying over on the H thread and the PR thread....I'll copy it over to here. I'm experimenting with a barred cross myself and the line I used had nice tight feathering as well

Thanks aoxa. I do note this when evaluating whether an individual is a keeper for the breeding pens. I'm wondering if the other pattern breeders share these concerns and how they evaluate and what steps they'd take.

Maybe it was our recent windy days that also brings this to my thoughts.

Here's the "experiment" I'm referring to

I am setting a course for the next breeding season and one of my projects is to reduce/remove the brassiness in my male Columbians. An unexpected off shoot of this project is that I have gotten 3 very nice pullets, and these pullets are 3/4 Columbian Rock and 1/4 Barred Rock (from a well know breeder of barred rocks, and winner of many points in Rock Club shows)

Here are a few pictures, all of the same pullet. She will be 13 weeks old this next Sunday.

Notice the long FLAT back, lack of cushion, tail spread and front end. I believe she carries herself with good balance and her leg color is exceptional. Her color is a bit off as one would expect, but I think I can clean that up. I am going to individually mate her back to her sire as soon as she reaches POL, hopefully in Jan/Feb. If type holds as I expect, I think she can move me down the road a good bit. She is certainly carrying the type of the Barred line she is out of.

Half of my females are tight like that and half are more fluffy. But the fluffier ones are bigger, and are the older females.

I'm really impressed with the chicks I got from the breeder. He just handed me a bucket of eggs (roughly 40) for free when I picked up my two trios (one of which he gave to me because he heard about our fire). My hatchability was outstanding with them.

They do have the Maine line in their blood, but he has been working with them and getting them where he wanted them for years. I know he didn't give me his best trios, but the eggs - all of his barred rocks were free ranging together. I could have very easily got chicks from his best breeders. Fingers crossed!

He only works on that one large fowl breed and variety. That's focus :)
