Let some F1 chicks out for some free time. Very, very busy birds, dedicated to ranging. These birds wouldn't likely make the greatest "pets" for people. They are altogether too much the chicken bent on doing their job. LOL

Very stiff wind today, kinda of blowing them around.
Wow they really look much different on the grass! Makes their barring POP! :D

That cockerel won't be used in our program, but he's big 'ol boy for only 12 weeks. He's got it going on. Just about everything you'd look for in a nice, young BR cockerel. He'll be leaving, I should think, by this weekend. Not that it matters that much.

Why is that Fred? Are you using a GSPR rock boy over these girls?

Man his feet are yellow!

I like that light male, he would be a primo choice one for a Del remake parent stock breeder for sure. I have a light one like this but he is an F2 out of the Del projects Kathy had created he is not typically the best one for a project male but I will be crossing him over some of my newly aquired NH pullets from XW poultry for color test run. (for experimental use only) LOL

anyway nice male I hope to get some on the ground as light as him in the near future myself.

Lots of the GSBR roosters are light colored, it seems to me. We used a dark version as our pure XW-GSBR line last winter.

This is a likely grand sire of Jeremy W. I do believe.

Normally, whenever people show their Marvin Stukel males, they tend toward the darker side.

Yes I have 3 GSBR roosters now 2 are lighter than one but still not as light as the boy you showed and not as light as the F2 boy either. I will hatch me out some of my BRs this fall when they're done with the molt. I have males from Kathy's bunch and hens from Matt. I hope to get a good light one with a descent tail too for starting my version of the Del remake project. I have some F1 projects from Kathy I will use and practice with but you know everyone likes their own fame so I will have my own select strain too someday.

I'm using the half German half Reese NH for the dames as these are much much more of a "real" type NH than the German strain are, they are small too me, but these girls are pleasingly plump (voluptuous) LOL
I'm done blabbering back to "real" Plymouth Rocks

I've been tempted to dabble with some other projects, but frankly, one needs to know their limits. I've certainly reached mine which is why that light cockerel will find a home, either on another homestead or the freezer. One reason he's light is that he's a bit of a throw back.

Way, way back in Maine line, the word is there was an outcross with a White Rock. That seems right. The White will muddy the barring and add size, but the vigor gained? Outstanding. That is why it was done, I imagine. The Whites are also Rocks so this isn't/wasn't an out cross to a different breed, merely a different variety within the breed.

We purposely chose the Maine line for it's vigor. We fully expect it to take heavy culling and three to four generations to settle in. That's fine with us. The hens will lay eggs and the cockerels will eat just fine. There just won't be anything much show worthy for a while.

Jeff, I wish you success with the Del project. You've assembled the pieces from good sources.

Thanks Fred for the will wishes, I hope you get to where you want to be too on the BRs I like them a lot too(my problem is I like a lot of stuff/too much)

There was a little murmuring sometime back that the Reese BR(psst. supposedly secret) have had an outcrossing of WR blood too somewhere way back when IDK but its possible even if they are advertised as not to have been, only few really know and I imagine they "ain't" gonna say huh?

Perhaps there was an outcrossing to WR with the GSBR's....vigor and size as the goals...did not do much for the tails unfortunately...

As an aside, Ruth Lee Caron in TX has a fine barred rock improvement project going too...she started with XW birds and crossed them with another strain or 2...one is Duckworth I believe... I believe she is on her 4th generation and they have nice tails coming on and nice sharp barring...tight feathered as well. she is on Facebook....trying to get her on BYC with this thread...she also has some nice SPR's too. She has some super nice birds and could be an excellent contributor here and resource for birds too. Anyone know her?
