The Plymouth Rock Breeders thread

I know this. There are some great birds in NY and the wider area. We've sent some hatching eggs up that way over the years so I suppose there might be some pretty decent males around for your Barred females. For certain, there will be some great young cockerels hatched out soon up that way. By August, they'll be grown out sufficiently for many of the breeders to be shedding themselves of many of them. If you're looking for utility, these birds are pretty hard to beat.
A good Barred Rock hen will lay very well, even into her 3rd laying season and well beyond. Lots of time to produce some good offspring from them.

If you want some SPR, I know a few sources where you can get some really good eggs, right here on this thread. Just read back a few dozen pages or more.

Fred I suspect you and I are about the same age since I am retired. I have no goals as far as show, something I believe has ruined many breeds, for the intended utility. However some breeds are not as common as they used to be. SPR's and PR's are two in NY that I know of. As far as serious keepers I think many who have them keep just a couple of hens.

When I first started with Delaware I could find no one in the state that had them. I drove 5 hrs to get 4 hens and a rooster to go with my 3 hatchery hens.

Showing doesn't ruin breeds, bad breeders do. The Standard is what makes and defines a bird, if they don't meet the Standard (well close to it) they aren't that breed, they're just mutts.

Nothing personal, just hate the misconception that a show animal is not good for production qualities. They have to be both to be good stock. Too much bad breeding and lazy breeding going on on both sides.

Ok breeders.....quick question

I dodged the bullet on 2 different snow/ice storms here in the deep south without a power failure.....eggs are in the incubator

Apparently today someone hit a power pole with a transformer on it and power was out for about 3 hours (I'm traveling in NC and my youngest called me a bit panicked)

Hatch is due Saturday.....are the eggs doomed or are they just "slowed down a bit"??

Anyone with experience or insight on this one?

Thanks

If the temp in the incubator didn't drop too far they should be ok. I was without power for 5 hours last year and the hatch went off normally.

If no one lifted the lid and allowed them to cool faster than they would have, 3 hours is just fine. Oh sure, you'll never know if there is a 20% shrinkage in hatch and if you do get a reduction, you can probably attribute it to that.

I seriously doubt the loss is total. Not in three hours.

Thanks Fred

No one touched the incubator....Colby just called me in a panic asking what to do (I'm in NC this week)
Eggs are due Saturday, but Jenn and I will be gone celebrating 22 yrs, so if they are a few hours later I'll never know it
