The Plymouth Rock Breeders thread

I would like opinions on which is the best meat bird. APA standard bred Barred Rocks or APA standard bred New Hampshires. Which has the fullest breast? I know this is the BR thread but I am sure some of you have experience with both.
Since no one has answered your question, I will give it a shot. I don't know! lol. I have not raised either breed. It may be difficult to make a general statement. The most important factor would be how the bird has been bred. I just got some hatching eggs from a Barred Rock breeder who bred for meat production, so I am looking forward to seeing what a heritage breed can do in this regard. I do know that the New Hampshires have a reputation for a quicker grow out. Both of these breeds have been used in the broiler industry at different points in the past so the genes should be there to work with. The Farming and Homesteading with Heritage Poultry thread is more likely to have discussions about meat production, with pictures, than the other threads. Good luck and post some pictures of dressed birds if you get some. In my opinion, this is an overlooked, but important part of their heritage.

I would ask either Frank Reese or Jeremy Woeple since both breed the Barred Rocks and New Hamps.
Their contact information is easily obtained on their farm websites.

XW Poultry Ranch, Nebraska and Good Shepherd Poultry Ranch.

Frank sells his birds as meat. He'd be in the know for sure. But the history of New Hamshires should be the bird for early maturing meat quality. They are Rhode Island Reds that were bred for that quality to extent of being another breed. Of course were talking about non hatchery birds. A hatchery New Hampshire is almost identical to a hatchery Rhode Island Red and I just call them all Production Reds.

I'm still in TX and have been unable to post on the families ancient computer. Due home soon and much to catch up on.

DW says snow predicted the day I come home. Not happy about that, but such is life.

Hope all are well,

TTFN,

Rancher

My GSBR roo I got from Matt1616 is Much bigger than the German NH I had. Better birds all around at my place. Sold all the GN over a year ago.

A couple pictures of my Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock breeding pens. Should have some chicks later this week. :)

These pics don't do these two birds justice. They are 10 months old and are from Scott's (Yard Full O' Rocks) line. Etowah Valley Columbian Rocks! Can't wait to see what another months growth does for them.

Again, I apologize for slowly creeping thought the entire thread. For the record, this is the first time I have seen a large fowl Columbian win Best of Breed in an open show... EVER!
GREAT JOB GUYS!!! Anything other than a White is rare.
