The Police Took My Chickens

I came home from work today to find a orange slip on my front door.
It said, " Your chickens were taken. It is illegal to keep chickens."

They went into my fenced in backyard, into my enclosed porch and into my garage to take my 4 hens.

I called the police department and they directed me to the humane society.
They told me it would cost $35 to get them back, because they, "had to buy a bag of chicken food".
I went and filled out a paper, payed my money and picked up my girls.
The woman at the desk said the police will check back in a week to make sure I don't have any chickens at my house.

I have a friend that lives in the county and she has chickens, she said she will take them for me.

As a side note - they thought my silkie was a turkey.

I'm so, so, so sad.

Don't they need a search warrant to be able to enter your house? IMO that's just plain rude and uncalled for. Did they leave any previous notice that you cannot keep them???

They didn't leave a warning or citation? They don't sound like they followed regulations. Research your town ordinances and the procedures they are required to follow after finding a violation. Use that info to back you up.

I really does not sound like the police got your chickens. I bet that it is a private citizen that came on your property and "stole" them from you and then took them to the animal shelter.

That is unbelievable! How terrible for you! That doesn't sound like the Police took them, and if they did, they did not act within the law. Fight it, girl!

You need to get a lawyer. They have to cite you first, well warn first but anyway. They can not seize your property without doing so. I would have them in deep doo doo if they came on to my property without a warrant, illegally entered your home and seized your property!
I don't wanna hear they had cause. What they did is illegal...contact your attorney general!!

there should be a name on that slip, the officer who gave it. I would ask why you wern't cited and allowed to fight it or relocate them. Contact the cheif!!
