I am so glad I live where I do for this reason. I can't imagine how laws don't allow anyone to raise a few chickens on their own property.....

I am so sorry - I won't be of much help on this but I do feel for you. That would be awful to have happen.

But wait! something isn't adding up! they will give you them back and charge you feed. if they are illegal they will NOT give them back to you or let you relocate them either after being seized. they would have to be re adopted out or put down.
Like if they seize your puppy u can't go get it and relocate it! It has been seized...catch my drift!!

I cannot imagine thay had a legal right to come onto your property and confiscate your chickens or anything else without a search warrant. How did they know you had chickens? This sounds like unlawful search and seizure to me. Usually they will serve you with a cease and desist order and give you time to rectify the situation. Is there a law school near you? You might be able to interest a law student into researching it for you. I would also go down to the police department and demand that they show you the law that allowed them to come on your property in the first place.

Well said, Sillystunt!! EXACTLY!! Man, I HATE stuff like this - whatever happened to live and let live? A right to privacy? A right to do as you please on your own property, providing you're not interfering with the right of others to enjoy THEIR property? Busybodies and interferers drive me nuts... Oh, and I'm offff!!

The OP states they were in her garage... I'm sorry but to me it sounds like the police forcibly entered her house, which IS illegal in most nations including the USA.

What they did themselves was illegal and not to protocol... I would see about getting a lawyer in this matter because they invaded your privacy and acted illegally.

I live in Willmar, MN.

It was a real police note, with an officer's name, badge number, ect.
If I had to guess, I would say that one of my neighbors has a friend or friends on the police force.

I really can't belive they didn't give me a warning!

I don't even want to go home, it feels like a robber has been in my house.

I really can't believe with all the gang violence and drugs in Willmar that they would worry about 4 hens.

I've had them for 2 years and none of my neighbors have even asked if I had chickens or any questions about anything (if they were noisy, which they are NOT).

I have a fenced in (hidden) run for them against my house, so it's not like they were free ranging in the neighborhood.
