The Price of Chicken Feed

I went to Boss Brothers and got a 50 pound bag of layer pellets for $10.25; but when I looked when unloading it the label read 15%... did I get jipped? Is that too low for 8 month old laying hens? they also get some free range and a cup of scratch.

In South Lousiana, there are so many different prices. I go to at least 3 different feed stores to get the best price. This is what I pay for feed:

50lb bag of layer pellets - $9.00
50lb bag of layer crumber - $9.00
50lb bag of cracked corn - $8.50
55 gallon drum of whole corn - a guy charges me only $20.00 and delivers
55 gallon drum of goat pellets - a guy charges me only $20.00 and delivers
25lb bag of starter/grower - $7.00
50lb bag of scratch - $8.00
50lb bag of rabbit pellets - $13.00
bale of hay $2.50 a bale
50lb bag of mixed seed (milo, wheat, oats, rice, pellets, sunflower seeds) $13.00

I get my layer pellets, cracked corn and triple cleaned wheat for our whole wheat flour from a local elevator. I welded for years professionally, so, when the elevator needs something welded I take care of it. In return, I never run out of food. This economy is a tragedy, but, it has brought some good things back.......... trading neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend.

We can buy a bushel of corn at our local co-op grain elevator that custom grinds feed for 15 cents above the CBOT current price, and $1.50 per cwt to grind,or crack the corn,,Very reasonable, about $4.50 for 54 lbs.

We have a co-op across the road from me, but they bring the grain in from somewhere else and you have to reorder it. I really need to check into it more to see if the prices are cheaper than what I'm paying now.

I bought Purina Layena at TSC this week because I had the $2 off coupon they mailed me. That made it $9.99/50 lbs. I have been buying Southern States Layer pellets at $10.50/50lbs. The chickens seem to like the Layena better, and are eating more of it. But how do I know if it's because they like it more, or if they know they need to eat more to be full and get what they need? At any rate, they appear to be going through this bag quicker than they normal. It's been taking about 3-4 weeks for 31 chickens to eat 50lbs of feed! Of course they are free ranging from morning until night, and we have fields that were previously hay fields so lots of grain grasses, and apple and pear trees. They clean the ground of any fruit that falls.

I use cracked corn instead of the scratch grain because they only want the corn out of the scratch and leave the rest! I mix the cracked corn with black oil sunflower seeds. They gobble that up. They get about a quart of that mixture once a day. Broody hen has a bowl of that and some layer pellets in her nest to eat as she wants it. She has lost so much weight since being broody that I started giving her the bowl this week. Of course I didnt' realize her weight loss until this week either. Hoping she'll gain it back soon.

Well I went to the feed mill:
50 lbs- 21% protein starter/grower...........11.00 ( I feed this to all the chickens )
50 lbs- 16% protein dairy...........................9.00
50 lbs- scratch grain.....................................7.75
50 lbs- dog food (buckeye)..........................14.50
100 lbs- steer feed......................................14.00
50 lbs- black oiled sunflower seed...............17.00
50 lbs- oats..................................................8.50
50 lbs- whole corn........................................4.00

OMG!

Look at those prices! $7.50 for a 50lb bag of chicken scratch, $11 for a 50lb back of 21% protein starters. You are talking $5 bucks cheaper than here on everything! Bring those prices my way here in San Diego. OMG!
