The Price of Chicken Feed

Mojo Chick'n :

I was talking to the feedstore guy yesterday - he figured out the costs for me, I can buy two tons bulk for around 4 bucks per 50# (we figured it by the bag which is 50# bags) as opposed to 6.50 I am paying for 50# now (in bag).

I definately NEED one of those gravity wagons.

eta - the 4 bucks per 50# bulks figures out to about 12.5 cents per pound.

But you have to take into consideration how that feed is going to keep.

I have over 70 chickens right now and until yesterday, 60 quail that I fed 16-18% layer from the mill with oyster shells blended right in.
1/2 ton lasts me about 2 months. And that is about the maximum they WILL sell me because they are worried about the feed spoiling.

The local hog confinement barns (3rd largest pork producers in the states) fill their bulk bins weekly to keep the feed fresh. It is mixed and delivered the same day.

2 tons would feed about last me 8 months with 130 birds but would spoil and loose it's nutritional value LONG before the feed ran out. Throwing out 1.5 ton of feed stuck to the inside of a wagon doesn't dollar out either.

Just my 2cents. Not singling you out Meri, just info for all to consider.

True, if all I were feeding were chickens, I wouldn't buy that much feed.

The calves/cows (14 and adding) eat a 5 gallon bucket full of feed a day (same feed as the chickens) so it goes pretty quickly that way.

eta - as the calves get bigger their feed consumption will go up, also.
