The Price of Chicken Feed

Each night I feed my girls a mixture of their laying pellets with warm water and to that I add whatever is on hand...,.yogurt, buttermilk, sour cream. The other night I had carrot peelings that I micro'd and added to the mix. There wasn't anything left over. I've also added oatmeal and they loved that too. I think they're just little piggies in chicken suits. LOL

Here in Phx we get bulk feed (either grower or layer) for 40 cents a pound

Ouch!!! That's 3X's of what I pay. Have you extinguished all other options?

I understand there aren't a whole lot of corn fields in AZ but geez....

There goes my dream of spending winters in AZ

Seems like here in to West Cost, things are a bit costly compared to other states. Errr...

cracked corn-10.50 per hundred
chick starter-20.75-per hundred
layer pellets-15.75-per hundred
scratch-15.05-per hundred

From one of our local mills

If you look to see if you have a producers co-op or a place that mills the feed you can get it a lot cheaper . I buy mine in Bryan Tx ,and it is 6.75 for a 50. lb bag for layer pellets and 5.25 for a 50. lb of scratch .The most that I have ever paid was 11.00 for the medicated chick starter and it is 50. lbs also . I hope you have one in your area .

5.50 for 50# bag of whole corn

5.75 for a 50# bag of cracked corn

6.50 for a 50# bag of 16% feed (feedstore mix).

Guy at the feedstore said prices should be going down really soon here, too - the local corn should be coming in and they won't have to have it trucked in.

I can't imagine paying as much as some of the folks on here have to pay for feed. I couldn't have as many chickens as I do without feed being ralatively cheap where I live.

eta - I don't feed scratch, or if I do, I just toss them a handful or two of cracked corn. I have the corn for the donkeys, the chickens and cows eat the same 16% feed (the chickens get added oyster shell and sometimes get Kickin' Chick'n vitamins added to theirs).

I've been shopping for a gravity wagon so I can buy in bulk (I feed the chickens the same feed as the calves). Problem is, this time of year EVERYONE is shopping for gravity wagons

so they are a bit pricey right now.

I was talking to the feedstore guy yesterday - he figured out the costs for me, I can buy two tons bulk for around 4 bucks per 50# (we figured it by the bag which is 50# bags) as opposed to 6.50 I am paying for 50# now (in bag).

I definately NEED one of those gravity wagons.

eta - the 4 bucks per 50# bulks figures out to about 12.5 cents per pound.
