Your welcome! I don't know why she hasn't 'left them' yet, I think it really depends on the mom and the chicks. I have never had a broody raise chicks (coop is full) so I'm not sure, but the chicks could feel threatened by a big flock, and still want mama's protection. I read about one broody who kept mothering her chicks even after they were a year old!

If you could design a chicken breed, with any feather pattern (even ones that don't exist), temperment, and egg laying/meat ability, what would it be like, and what would you call it?

Oooooh that's a toughie. I would have to go with one that had the feather pattern of a silver sebright, was frizzled, cold hearty, had a rose comb, a small crest, moderate egg layer, and a calm disposition. I would call it a Silver Laced Essex.

Temperament: Calm, talkative, inquisitive, friendly
Features: Beard; Rose Comb; Five toes; long tail; Cold hearty, heat hearty.
Egg laying: Very good, 3-4 a week
Egg Color: Dark brick red to baby pink
Meat: Not bred for meat
Medium to large sized breed that likes to roam and forage. The tail is carried high, there is no crest and the legs are not feathered. The roosters are friendly, although a bit flighty; the hens are calm and can learn to cuddle. They will fly over fences under six feet high and will explore very widely. They do not like the dark and do not perch in trees, and are very good about laying in the nesting boxes.
