The Real ID Act??

Canada confuses me a little, not in a bad way. In some ways it is very socialistic, like
having national healthcare. In other ways it's got a very good, frontier type, stay the
heck away from me attitude.

It's not quite the target the U.S. is either.

I've lived and worked in both the USA and Canada. Currently in Canada but my opinion on the matter is, "the right to bear arms was put into the constitution for a reason and maybe its time people considered that option." Its just my frontier justice canadian coming out!

A good old house cleaning would do both countries a lot of good actually.

I would love to see at least regulations like mentioned above put into place. I grew up in a working family without health care of any kind, and it was really hard on us. I'm glad some Republicans are waking up and realizing there's a problem.

Oh, speaking of government run health care...did anyone see the Bush's budget plan? 200 billion to Iraq with 200 billion cuts from Medicare and Medicaid. Oh and 145 Billion stimulus package. Well, thank you old, disabled and impoverished people for sacrificing your health so that we can spend some dollars at Walmart and get the new Nintendo We and flat screen TV.

I can roll my eyes because I voted and it wasn't for him...

Anyway back to the Real ID Act.

Does the government think this is going to stop terrorist coming into to the country? How are they going to stop them if they are sneaking across the border? Build a wall in Canada, too...since that's how the 9/11 terrorists came through the Maine/Canada border. Why don't they just require passports to come in instead of forcing Americans to get some national ID? I believe they are already starting to require a passport to come in and out of the USA anyway.

Or is this aimed at illegal aliens? What I am not understanding is how anyone can get a drivers license or State ID with out a SSN and Birth Certificate (or Naturalized /Immigration) papers in the first place. I think the government should be figuring out why/how people are getting ID's they aren't entitled to. No ID, no government services and no need for it to be national.

If you already have a drivers license or state ID are you just going to have to renew it to get this new compliant ID? Well, how would that help since so many illegals already have licenses? When I went to renew my license, all I needed was my old license and $35.

I really don't see the benefit in the Real ID act, other then another step closer to eating Soylent Green....Not kidding!

I would like to point out that illegals can't get aid. As a legal immigrant my husband can't get unemployment or anything and as his family we can't get gov. housing, food stamps, etc. WIC is generally the ONLY thing available to illegals. We should worry less about a group of (generally) hard working people and more about getting citizens off their butts and stop using MY tax dollars.

I have a US driver's license, but i'm not a US citizen. In the state where mine was issued, amongst others, a SSN and birth certificate are not required, so I am perfectly entitled to it. I've done everything the legal way (ie the expensive way), but I didn't get a SSN until two years after I got my DL.

Angie you're killing me. We agree on 90% of the issues but I have to respond and defend
Bush (someone must, since he won't himself)

These budget plans are hundreds of pages long. It is so easy to pull what we want
out of them. The Bush administration has done more to support government HC for
impoverished families than any other administration. He was forced to veto the latest
bill because congress wanted the limit (in some states) of family income to be $75000
for government assisted HC. That is crazy. What this did was force him to veto and
now all the democrats can say he is evil. Please look at this closer. I'm not saying the
Republicans are any better. They are all politicians. But Washington played politics
with the lives of SO MANY people who really needed help.

The stimulus package is a different issue. HISTORY HAS PROVEN when you stimulate
the economy, assuming it works, you help US citizens, not just the rich. The rich
have the least to worry about.

We all need to look for solutions and press our representitives to move forward.
None of them want a real solution. The politicians love this crap.

I tried to show with an example that the Republican party has viable options that
can truly make a difference. If you take a good hard look at the Democratic party
you will find they love these divisions. It is what gives them their greatest power.

Please explain how this works to the forum. I have several friends who a legal aliens
so I know the answer but I want to hear it from you.

I came to the US as a student, to Kansas. I used my license from home for 6 months, but it was easier if I had a KS one for ID purposes as nobody understood the format of my original one. In order to get a driver's license, I presented my passport at the DMV, took the test and was then issued a license. In KS you don't have to have a SSN to get a license, and you don't have to have your SSN on your license if you do have one.

I couldn't get a SSN and couldn't work until I graduated, which made life extremely difficult. The SS card I got specifically stated on it that it needed to be accompanied by evidence of eligibility to work, which was another card valid for a year. I got married during that year (last year), and filed for conditional permanent residency which came through in October. I was also not allowed to work between filing for residency and being accepted. I paid over $400 in filing fees to be allowed to work

, and immigration cost approx $1500 in fees without us using an attorney. I have to file for the conditions on my residency to be removed within 90 days of our second anniversary, and then after another year I can apply for citizenship. I pay taxes as a citizen would, but cannot claim any kind of federal or state aid.

All I can say is I'm sorry. You are someone trying to do things the right way. Our
politicians want to give amnesty to millions of people who are here illegally, but
people like you need to jump though hoops and empty your wallets. It's not right.
Cara, you are already an American to me.
