you are too harsh on GFF. I would never call them Barn Yard specials, I would say their Cream legbars are of a Utility strain rather than a show quality strain. but they are Legbars none the less..... and the Male is clearly e+ not Crowwing ER

Take a look at the wing again. He does not have a whitish/cream wing bay; the barring in the wing bay is too good. I will stick with my first guess- a birchen bird- I would have to see his wing stretched out to make a better determination. If he has any non-black color/non-white in the wing bay he is not birchen,

As far as Greenfire, when a breeder sells a bird for a large amount of money, the bird had better be show quality and purebred.

I have 6 Rhodebar cockerels... all 6 were easily sexed at birth, tho some were darker than others.
Two or three I consider culls for what I'm looking for as they were lighter in color at birth.
Three to four were darker, which is what I'm looking for for autosexing.
They have all six been banded since birth to track their growth and color changes.
I am only going to keep two... if anyone is interested in a RB cockerel let me know... otherwise the extras will go into the meat group in the fall.
These chicks are from brown eggs, not green...

From the looks of it I'm thinking the darker ones are doubled barred also... But i could be wrong. Although they all 6 look similar in color now, so I'm glad I banded them from the beginning. Because this generation is pure RB, I would "hope" they were all double barred. Wouldn't be RB if they weren't. But dunno yet... Are other folks getting single bar in their RB x RB?

My understanding, and I certainly hope some of the genetic gurus will weigh in, is that the difference between a single barred male and a double barred male is the double barred male is lighter. If you have both single and double barred males then they came from single barred stock. If a cock is double barred and the hen is barred then the offspring males should all be double barred, which would be the lighter color.

I would not bank trusting that your stock came from a double barred RB given that most of the original stock (if not all) came from GFF and as many on this thread can attest to there are issues with some of GFF Rhodebars not being pure.

If you keep and use your dark males, and they are indeed single barred, then you are 1 step behind working towards pure Rhodebars. If you keep and use your lighter males then you will be 1 step ahead.

If I had both light and darker males I would take the presumption that the light males are double barred and the darker males are single barred. I would concentrate on getting pure Rhodebars (double barred males) and work on darkening the color using your HRIR stock.

Well that's the plan, I won't use any cockerels are are NOT double barred. But the enter all optimist in me is hoping that my darker ones are still light enough to be double barred. They are by no means "dark" just not yellow like 2 of them were. I guess its a wait and see game now since I will not be breeding until the first of the year regardless... So I'm curious to see how they evolve.

Okay Sheri, I think I understand now after going back and looking at your just hatched pics. You are considering your chicks that were more yellow as the "lighter" ones and the ones that weren't yellow your "darker" ones. If that is correct then I would say yes keep your darker ones and cull the yellow ones.
