The Rhodebar thread!

Surprising how similar the males turned out with the exception of the first male and the last male Dark vs Light. Very nice, thanks for taking the time to grab some pics. And beautiful dog in the background supervising!!!!!

I am too... I guess I was expecting more of a difference. I'm wondering though if there won't be more of a difference as they age.

The dog is Reptar, my male maremma, and father of the 3 week old pups that will be going in with the chickens next week with their mom who is a fantastic guardian for chickens as well as sheep. I couldn't run my farm without all of my maremma. One of the chicks was fussing at me and didn't want his picture taken and Reptar wanted to make sure it was ok...

He is about the same age as my HRIR give or take a week or two, so hatched out in Feb.

This is a pic of when I got him so maybe 3 weeks old

This is him today about 19 (+/-). Sorry for the lousy pic but it is raining out and they are in a covered run.

Awe... Pretty boy!!!
Thanks for posting

Would like opinions about these two boys... I will likely keep both, but am trying to evaluate their pros and cons.
Both were obvious autosexed at hatch, but not yellow...
Yes, blue continues to be a little darker than purple but purple has a better tail set.
What else do more experienced eyes see?
All criticism and opinions welcome please.
They will be put over HRIR hens to create F1 crosses, etc.
I realize they are only 13 weeks old... but am learning and trying to "see"

Hi hope you are doing great.. at this point I would keep the male in the top pic...

To me purple still looks more double barred then blue. I would breed them both to see what you get but my preference would be purple, as long as he was not yellow at hatch. Although blue looks bigger I like the type on purple better, nice long straight back and nice tail. I would not worry if purple is smaller since you will get size when you breed them with your Reds.

SO let me get this straight, Rhodebars are basically just Welsummers with Sex-Link barring?

Ummm no. Rhodebars are not sex-linked, they are autosexed. They are a autosexed, barred crossing of Brussbars and Rhode Island Reds. Although there are some other theories out there about how something similar could be created, the Rhodebar should basically be a barred, autosexed RIR

I have 6 Rhodebar cockerels and am only going to keep two. If anyone wants a RB cockerel please PM me... These were hatched out of brown eggs and were easily autosexed at birth.

A Welsummer with barring would be a Welbar, I'm not sure where you pulled Welsummers from discussion about Rhodebars.

While the breed is autosexable the barring gene itself is sex-linked which is part of the mechanism that allows for autosexing if I understand correctly.
