The Rhodebar thread!

Pics
Here are a couple of pics. The chicks around him are not Rhodebars, but 1 GLW, some sex-links, and Blue Barred Rocks.

GLW, Rhodebar male and female.

I've got some Rhodbars that should start hatching tomorrow!!! I got the eggs out of Florida and am so excited to see what I get :) I have candled them and I think all but one are viable so I may have 8-9 hatch. I have not had this breed before but was attracted to it because of the auto-sexing characteristic as well as the good egg-laying ability. I've been reading through this thread and have learned a lot! Thanks for all the good info.

Well, I have 6 little Rhodbar babies!! The first three to hatch were girls and I was questioning whether I was really getting females until the 4th chick came - he was SOLID yellow! LOL! So, it was pretty easy to see the difference in the two. The 5th and 6th were also males. There was a 7th one that I was going to toss out but when I candled it, I saw a baby breathing inside! So, I left it in the 'bator. This morning I looked again and it was still breathing but hadn't even pipped, so I made a small hole to see if that would get it started. So far, it has not come out the rest of the way. I'm not sure what to do - if I should just leave it, of help it out. Any ideas?? Hatch day was the 9th so its been a good 36 hours after the others have hatched...... How long should I leave it in the incubator? I had already washed and sterilized the bator and set my BCM eggs in it for lockdown when I suddenly saw that this one was still breathing! So, it is in the incubator with my BCM eggs that are due to hatch Saturday....

check for chick pics on this thread. males should NOT be solid yellow. if you got any solid yellow chicks then they must be wheaten(see salmon faverolle chicks https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...d-for-the-byc-2012-calendar/1090#post_7438109) and they can be of both sex

He isn't solid yellow but has mostly yellow - he had a little black around his eyes but his egg came from a pen that is only Rhodebars so I don't know how he could be something else...??? That's really odd. The other males are also yellowish with very faint brown stripes in them. The females have the dark chipmunk stripes and are pretty obviously female. I will get pictures of them today and post so you can see what I mean.

Thanks so much for the link to the hatching info. The little fellow wasn't breathing when I got back home. I may have killed it when I was trying to help. I learned a lot reading that article - really good info. From now on, I will just leave them in the bator at least 3 days beyond the hatch date before I worry!!

Again, I will post pictures of them in a little while.

Thanks again for the info.
