I dont think you Grasp what I am trying point out here....

do you want to improve Rhodebars? HRIR is the only way.. Want to stay with double barred males? then keep breeding the low quality birds you have, simple as that EDIT... and I know you will say, oh but Autosexing is so important I cant imagine losing it... well, first you just dont lose Sex linked Barring and e+ wildtype. and second whats the point on keekping an Autosexing breed that at this moment is Only a Shell of its former self? I mean just look at them, some of them look dont even look as(Type, shape) Hatchery RIR... thats how bad things are

Oh no... totally agree Nic... that comment was meant for someone else in response to wondering if they had any double barred cockerels from a rb x rir. I believe you understand more about these genetics than most. And always appreciate your understanding and insight. I just can't figure out why you aren't breeding them yourself. ;-)

This is fascinating...and again I will go back to the premise that crossing a double barred Rhodebar cock/erel with HRIR females, tossing all the F1 males and then backcrossing the F1 pullets to the double barred Rhodebar sire is one way to get F2 autosexing with better type/lay rates?

If you cross a Rhodebar roo with a RIR hen (hatchery or heritage), then you will not get any double barred cockerels.... they will all be single barred.
Remember, ultimately you want single barred pullets and double barred cockerels.
Now "some" of the pullets will be single barred, and some of them will not be barred at all.

There are many ways to skin a cat - just depends if you want the skin or the meat. ;-)
I will be saving the best single barred f1 of both sex to breed back to set type. .. may as well use the skin and the meat. ;-)

18 week old first generation Rhodebar x Hatchery rhode island red hen. Theres a roo with one barring gene. Also note the barring in the pullets. Some have little sign of barring and some have very pronounced barring It was snowing as i took these pictures

I just want to clarify that last comment.....if you use a double barred rhodebars roo over HRIR pullets or hens....you will get 100% barred chicks all the roos will be single barred and so will the pullets. if breed back to the pullets you will get some double barred roos to use.

the resulting Rhodebars from that cross will have better type and the original parents....But not as good if you use the F1 males(RhodebarxHRIR) back to HRIR to infuse more of the good genes into those birds, basically you will be producing 75% HRIR birds but that carry Barring(50% of them) and e+/eWh(50% of them)
Quote:
Thats correct, that is if you want to go back at pure Rhodebar females at this stage, you can always breed back to RIR and get some e+eWh B/b+ males(75% HRIR) and cross them to pure Rhodebar females to produce even better birds... of try your luck with e+/eWh B/- hens(75% HRIR) and mate it to F1 or BC! Male and be in the look out for double Barred males that show typical e+/e+ B/B pattern at hatch

I live in Nicaragua and the Closest thing I have to RIR is ISA brown battery type hens.... they do carry mahogany and eWh and lay large brown eggs but thats the only thing they have kept from their RIR relatives

yes you are right. .. my fingers try to be as fast as my brain and it often doesnt work... which is a stretch since the brain isn't that fast. Thanks for catching that
