The Rhodebar thread!

So I went out to work on my outdoor brooder, which is next to my RB/HRIR breeding pen. I kept hearing peeping but I knew I had been pulling eggs from them. They both stopped laying and were just brooding hay, or so I thought. They must have had an egg hidden under the hay because sure enough they have a little baby chick in there. There is only 1 and both hens are trying to mother it. If it's not one thing it's something else, lol. I have 4 out of 6 of my HRIR broody right now. Good thing I don't need any eggs to hatch right now or I'd be in trouble.

Gotta love it. When they are determined to hatch some they always find a way. I was pulling and hatching eggs like crazy for one of my projects and one decided to hatch her own in the crawlspace of the breeding pen. Hopefully with two mommas watching over she will be fine.

my first broody rhodebar has been an excellent mother so far. she sat tight on 11 eggs for 23 days hatching all but 3 and 1 died. she only got off eggs a few times. our second broody rhodebar has been sitting tight on 12 eggs a little over a day now.

I saw this thread and am wodering what a Rhodebar is?
Is it a cross between a RIR and a BR?

The Rhodebar is a barred, autosexed RIR developed from Brussbars and RIR. It is not a hybrid, it is a purebred breed which breeds true.

The hens are single barred and the cocks are double barred. Most of the ones in the US look similar to the link below. The need a lot of improvement. Several of us on this thread are out crossing new HRIR blood into them.

I have some day old pairs and trios I am hatching and selling this spring. They are not the genetically improved as we haven't done enough generations of those to get back to purebred autosexing yet. But these are pure Rhodebars and are easily sexed at hatch.
I live less than an hour north of you. If you are interested in pairs or trios just pm me for details and to get on the waiting list.

Been lurking here for a while, but never posted. Here are my first Rhodebars, one male and 5 females, about 3 weeks old. I figure they are not going to impress any breeders with their show qualities, but I got them to experiment with layers that can replace the process of buying new sex link chicks every few years. I only want utility birds that are "self perpetuating sex links", hence my desire to work with auto-sexing breeds.
