The Rhodesian Ridgebacks struck again!

Okay I have to play the devil's advocate here. I am not condoning or defending what happened at all. In fact it is so sickening that this has been allowed to happen repeatedly. What I am saying is that all too often the dogs pay for the owner's crimes. That's what is not fair. Ridgebacks are sweet animals. We've had many in foster care and they have found loving homes where they've been wonderful pets.
These dogs shouldn't be euthanized but rather taken from these people and separated. After being separated awhile and worked with they can have the same chance at a long healthy life like our other ones have. When there are 2 or more dogs they develop a pack mentality. Once they do that, they are on the prowl for prey. That mentality though can be broken/retrained once they are not longer a pack.
That is awful that these dogs have been allowed to roam free and cause the damage they have but it's their owners fault, not theirs. I think they should be taken away whether by animal control or a humane group so that they can be worked with and placed in a proper home. Then I think the guy needs to be fined out the yin yang so in the event he contemplates doing this again, he may think twice.

Again, I want to say I'm not condoning or defending what has happened, only that there need to be stiffer fines, even jail time if need be, for negligent pet owners.

I just wanted to add something....I have nine dogs as you can see by my siggy line. When I had all of them there probably 12 total. Most are lab mixes, mutts, beagles etc. I used to have no trouble with my dogs at all until one day. I had all the lab mixes out like I usually did and for some reason one of them went after the other (daughter going after mom). The others were egging it on and trying to jump in as well. By the time I was able to break it up the momma's ear was almost completely torn off. I have never seen anything so gross in my life. We were able to have the ear reattached thank God. Needless to say after that I kept them separated for awhile because of fear of it happening again. I never allow those dogs together who actually instigated the fight since they had developed that 'pack' taste. I could have easily put one or two of them down b/c of what happened, but it was my fault in the first place. I was careless and I paid dearly for it.
So my point in saying this is that it can happen with any dogs that are allowed to go in packs whether it be pits, ridgebacks, labs, etc. If people are going to own animals then they need to be both responsible and accountable for the actions of those animals.

Actually, Nebraska state law clearly states that, after the first attack, the dogs should have been euthanized or declared dangerous and and kept only in accordance with the dangerous dog laws (kennel with top and bottom, signs posted, never outside unless the are in the secure kennel with a childproof lock, signs posted on the property, etc.) During the criminal trial when the prosecutor asked the judge to declare them dangerous, the judge showed her ignorance of the law. She decided that since they weren't pitbulls and the people promised to be good and keep them in, not to declare them dnagerous.

It does not matter that it is the owner's fault. The dogs have attack mode on the brain now and can't be trusted with anyone ever again. There is no choice but to euthanize dangerous dogs. Yes, that is entirely the owner's fault, that he created vicious animals out of dogs that could otherwise be good pets. RRs kill lions, for goodness sake! That type MUST be trained or they will probably suffer the same fate as these will likely suffer. There is no choice now.

Also, for every dog with a history of aggression looking for a home there are probably 100 with no bad history sitting in a shelter waiting to be adopted. I think that it's wiser to spend resources of them. Why let the dogs with an innocent past be killed while placing the mean ones?

Excellent point, Jody.

Jody, if those dogs came back, the sheriff probably would have to arrest the owners of the RR dogs. It is unexcused reason why that owner should have been owning them. Didn't they learn from the court previously with you?????????????

Forget the dogs and 'put down' the owners.. I hate when owners are not responsible for their animals... No matter how many dogs these people lose/have taken away, they will just get more. They might move, they might get a different breed but they always end up with other animals... with the same ending... I hope that the courts take the dogs, band the owners from owning any more and make them work at the local shelters for a year....

My dad was a huge animal person and nothing---NOTHING upset him more than someone who does not control their animals!!!

I love dogs, but my response is that those ridgebacks are a fatality waiting to happen. This is how little kids get mauled, pets get killed, and little old ladies get taken down on their way to the mailbox. Those dogs need to be euthed.

Yes.

The dogs need to be put down, aggressive dogs should not be tolerated in our society. I think anyone owning a pitbull terrier or other breed that is specifically bred for aggression/protecting should be required to have a license to own them. I was riding my bike with my Border Collie mix (on the leash) and a pitbull attacked us, luckily the owner came running but if he wasnt there my dog might have been dead. Those owners of the Ridgebacks need to be sued.

I'm in the same boat. I love pits and rotties. Do they have a bad rep? Sure. Would I take some strange dog from the humane society over one that is a known killer..... What? Sorry, re homing killer dogs seems a little loopy to me.

The owners never spent the time to train these dogs obviously. It is an owner's responsibility to train and I mean TRAIN large breed dogs, especially ones bred to hunt and fight. Anything else is an accident waiting to happen.

Jody, hope you get a different judge next time.
