Continued:

The two black chicks followed the hen around; morning, noon, and night. She led them around, showing them all the best places to eat and take dust baths. They were one big, happy family.

One day, a tall human came out with a frown on her face. She picked up the rooster and hugged him, tearing up as she did. "The neighbors don't like your beautiful song, Eagle. You have to go..." She tightened the hug before placing him in a small, metal cage. He was very confused at first, but became enraged when she began to take him away from his family. He squawked angrily, and thrashed around wildly in the cage. Another tear fell from her face, she closed her eyes, and placed him in the back of a truck. An unfamiliar man shook hands with her, and thanked her for the handsome new rooster. He drove off, and the two little chicks shook in fear as they watched the big, shining creature pull out of the driveway. They peeped loudly, looking for their now missing father. The hen held them close to her, and said to them in a trembling voice, "Daddy-- isn't here." The chicks nestled into her feathers for comfort. From that day oward, the routine still remained the same; wake up, follow mom around, take a nap, eat, and then go to sleep. The only thing that was missing was the happy, cheerful presence of him. They tried their best to keep the misery at the back of their minds, they couldn't hold on to it forever. Deep down, it still bothered them. It was one morning, when a familiar and unnerving sound was heard outside the coop again. There was a loud banging and rumbling; another truck pulled in. They, now much older, stepped out on thier own to investigate while their mother was still asleep. They stood and watched as another stranger stepped out from the vehicle. The same woman came back to the little family, this time, picking up EagleWing. "So, this one is the cockerel?" He asked. The woman nodded. "I'll take him. I'll pay extra if you give me the hen, too." The woman couldn't turn down the offer, she needed the money. She handed him the pullet and waved goodbye, and he stuck them both in a small, cold, dark box. He placed them in the car, smiling at the thought of his daughter's face when he brought home two chicks for her. (To be continued. Again.)

He and his sister were brought to the new yard, and dumped out into a filthy and poorly built coop. The coop had some few other sickly looking birds, and the coop looked as though it had not been cleaned in years. "I broguht a suprise for you!" Shouted the man, and his daughter came running out of the house. "What is it?" She asked impatiently, staring at him with a brow raised. "I brought home two new chicks for you." He said, opening the coop door and allowing her to peer in to look at them. She grinned as she saw the two, lanky, awkward little birds romping around. "As promised, I got you a rooster." He said, smiling at her. She hopped up and down. "Thank you, Daddy!" She squealed, grabbing at the little birds. She whined to him about how they didn't want to be picked up, and from then on, she didn't feel any love toward them. She ignored the already disgusting coop until it started to smell. EagleWing's sister started to become ill. She rarely, if ever, let the poor birds out to forage. When she let them out one particular morning, EagleWing tackled her out of nothing but frustration. His sister was coughing and wheezing, and her voice was so raspy and nearly inaudible. She screamed and hit him, looking at the small cut he made on her skin. Before she did anything further, EagleWing seized his sister by the wing and flew over the fence. They ran and ran, their legs didn't grow tired, because the freedom was so refreshing. The wind blew in their faces, and they both smiled. Sweet freedom... He thought. As soon as the farm was out of sight, his mind caught up with his legs and he finally felt exhaustion. He laid in a soft patch of clovers and grasses with her, and they both talked about what they dreamed and hoped for. She sought a comfortable and permanent shelter, and she wanted to begin her own family. They both giggled as they shared their thoughts and opinions. They fell asleep on a low branch together. She woke up in the early morning, her struggling lungs had a fit of coughing and wheezing. "It aches so badly, Eagle!" She shrieked. His eyes shot open and he looked into her helpless eyes. "I-I don't know what to do!" He shouted back. He couldn't go back to that filthy farm from which he came, but where else would he find the help she needed? He held her close and comforted her, walking her to a stream to take a drink and soothe her throat. She swallowed the water, and her throat felt no better. "Eagle, we need help!" She screamed, but it came out as a whisper. "Where do I get help?" He laid her down on the clovers and continued to comfort her. "Eagle--" She whispered, and he leaned closer. "I can't breathe..." She said, and her chest's movement slowed. She whispered, "Know that when I leave you, I promise I'll never really be gone." Her long, black eyelashes closed, and she was slipping away. He held her close to him, tears ran down his face. "I love you." Goodbye...
