Starflower caught him as he departed from gray's workshop, "Ruby! You said you'd come by for dinner!" she mock pouted.
"Is this dinner time?" he laughed, "first I must drop these off then maybe I'll come by"
"But it's getting dark!" she cried, "by the time you come over, the food will be cold!"
"Star, I will run if it helps, but I still have to do this first!"
"Okay then, be that way!" she laughed softly, " It's your loss if it's cold!"
He smiled, "I will try my best to hurry."
"I'll be waiting!" She replied as she turned and marched off, her long gray tail feathers trailing behind.
He shook his head and laughed before he turned and started jogging up the opposite road.
"Darkshadow, you have returned" The Seaking rasped, his course broken voice shattering the silence, "Hopefully with my plans"
Ruby bowed low, "I have my king"
"Goooood, let me see them"
Ruby handed them over slowly to his king, "They appear to be complete"
"Gooood, good, I will look over them tomorrow" he waved over a guard and motioned him to take the scrolls. "My dear Shadow, you do me proud" he coughed, "I see potential in you, lots of potential"
"Thanks to you, my king. If you need me no longer, I shall depart.
"Go" he waved vacantly.
Ruby bowed and backed out of the throne room.
"Ruby!" She squealed as he entered, "You came!"
"Ye-- Umpf" He started as Starflower hugged him, "Okay, calm down!"
"Dinner's still warmish, either way it'll taste good!"
"Really?" he said sarcastically, "Warmish?"
Starflower punched him in the ribs.
~`Chapter two`~
Darkshadow stood by the table covered in scrolls and old yellowed papers, mumbling as he sorted through them. No..... Wait yes, this the one... So brittle! Why do I get assigned a page's duties.... This is demeaning, I have other more important work I could be doing... It took him hours to sort through the papers, but finally he was done. He reported to his king, bowed than exited towards the road that led towards Starflower. He arrived at her empty den and stopped, slightly surprised by her absence. "Starflower? Is anyone home?" He inquired of the darkness within, "Star?" Receiving no answer he entered, all was dark but he could voices coming from the back of her den. He followed them until he saw the light of a flickering torch on the wall and voices grew to within hearing range. Her voice was present amongst the others and his heart, or what was left of it, sank with her words.
"When will they arrive?" called the voice he knew as Starflower..
"Soon, are you sure you didn't hear anything? replied a rougher voice, that of a rooster.
"Yes, now if you wish me to check I will"
"No need, I am just paranoid. My men are waiting, I must return"
"All is set then?"
"Yes"
"Good, I will be ready when you come, the gates shall be open"
There was a scuffling of feet and a grinding of stone, Ruby backed out slowly, his mind racing madly. No... I did not hear this, I was not here!! Star a traitor.. No no no no no.... I can't let her get away with this.... I c-can't... My king...
He was outside now, the sun beating down on him like the eyes of predator. He was lost, the only one he had let himself trust, broke him.
"Ruby!" A shocked Starflower said as she stood in the door way of her den, "W-what are you doing here?"
He managed a smile, "I wanted to say hi, I just came down, but I your den was empty soo"
"Oh, no I'm here, just working on stuff, Come in!"
"I can't" he replied, afraid that his cover would shatter.
"Oh! That's a shame, I just finished a pie! Are you sure?"
"Yes Star, I must leave" he turned and half fled, leaving Star standing there wondering what was actually going on.
He fled to the woods, all seemed twisted, all that the king said was right. The trees stood angrily above him bashing their branches, the quiet brook roared, he could not escape the noise.
