The Saga of Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers! UPDATED - Fatima died...

Chapter 23: Olympia of Midnight Goes Broody

Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers couldn't believe it. Her life had been turned completely upside-down. Thanks a lot, Olympia.
For yes, Olympia of Midnight was indeed broody. She sat on the fertile eggs the Great-Handed Ones had given her and growled at anyone who ventured near her. Even inside her brooding enclosure she was angry at anyone who came within a five-wing radius of her! Her feathers were puffed up so much that she greatly resembled a screaming black beach ball. Fatima vaguely remembered when Olympia had gone broody when she herself was still a chick. Oh, what a confusing time that was! And what a confusing time this was.
Without Olympia, the flock pecking order had been shuffled and scattered around. Now tiny Rita of the Small Flame was lead hen! Fatima found it very humiliating to be bossed around by a hen about half her size. She wished Olympia would hurry up and hatch those eggs.
Lillith of the Starry Night is so stupid, Fatima thought. She insisted on nesting right next to Olympia and making broody noises, though she was not broody at all. But as time went on Fatima found herself making broody noises too, even though she
did not want to sit on eggs. It was very catchy.
Yet life went on. The weather grew warmer and rain showers were frequent. Fatima didn't mind this- the rain brought the worms up from their holes and made them easy to find. The trees had new leaves, the grass was sprouting, and the bees were pollinating the new flowers. Summer was here at last.
