Three years is actually a good age for a red star (sexlink). Sexlink/Commercial bird's average lifespan is 2-3 years, beacuse they lay so many eggs in their first couple years it weakens them and they die usually a lot early than heritage breeds and pure breeds.​

Exactly. Rita has had a good life, and though she is one of our favorite hens and we are so sad that she is dying, she's reached the end of her lifespan.

Sorry, am new at this forum, so I guess I kinda just hijacked the thread. Was just complimenting the story the first post lol. I guess that's a older picture of her?
