The Sizzle Thread!

Thanks! Rowan keeps getting more and more color. He's got red coming in on the back of his head that didn't show up on the pic. I've 15 potential sizzles in the brooder! I'm planning to sort through tonight and try to decipher the wing feathers to see what I got.

I just realized I started this thread in chicken shows rather then breeds. Anyone know how I can move it over?

I've got 6 or 7 sizzles in the brooder. Most of them are curly sizzles. Here's one of my favorites, love his little stripe!

Good hind view of a 1 week old chick with the frizzle gene. Sometimes its hard to tell until you get right behind them. The wing tips are definetely going out.

These chicks are from Country's eggs.

What a cutie!! I knew I was a chick grandma but I didn't really feel like it until seeing these pictures. Now I feel like it!

So 15 of the eggs you got from me hatched out & 7 of them are curled Sizzles? Are the rest of them smooths, Silkies, or Frizzled Silkies, or can you tell yet?

Anyway, that is one really nice chick. If I'd hatched it here, it would definitely go in the "keeper" pile.

aoxa - You have a nice start on Sizzles with George. He's very nice & it looks like he has a good Silkie comb, which is one of the hardest things to get. It looks to me like your baby is a Frizzled Silkie but it's hard to tell at that age. discohen - Spike is adorable! I love his mohawk. You'll have a lot of work to do with his skin & comb color but the comb is flat so that's a start. I think you're both starting off better than I did. I bred a beautiful SQ frizzled btm Cochin to a gorgeous SQ Silkie hen & the birds below were the best I got. But we entered the hen in the country fair & she got me a lot of orders for chicks so I was off & running. Good luck to both of you on your current & future Sizzles.
Thanks so much!

This is his daughter Lorraine - She looks to be full silkie, but has light skin (?) Of of her I hatched 7 eggs - all have black skin. None were from George. I wonder if he carries a light skin gene or something? The mother was a blue silkie - but much smaller than Lorraine. At least what isn't a sizzle will be silkied :p Can you show Sizzles? Oh and that one chick I was questioning is definitely a sizzle. Over the long weekend that became apparent. Very curly! :D Blue in colouring like Lorraine up there. I don't know if I want it to be a roo or hen yet. If it is a roo, I will keep him and give George back to his original owner. Depending on the quality of the chick. George is over 2 years old - closer to three, and not the best at mating. :p

My understanding is that they can be shown, and are judged to a silkie standard apart from the feathers. My daughters will be showing on at our county fair in June. I will make sure to let you all know how she does.

Sheri- I sent you a PM. I also saw your ad for the polish chicks. Very very nice looking birds. Maybe Pipsqueak the baby chick needs a friend while the big girls are off seeking fame and fortune as show chickens. :)

Hurray! We've been moved to the right category!

Country-All 15 are your chicks, both sizzles and straight silkies. I've got about 20 more chicks in the brooder though including my own silkies and some Breda (feather legged large fowl), so I was getting a little confused. I'm going to sort again in a week when the feathers are more defined and get some exact numbers. I definetely have curly sizzles though, so am very happy.

Sager- I started my Sizzle project this year as well, but didn't start from scratch (which would take years). I got eggs from Emvickrey and Country and thus have chicks that are many generations away from all the headaches. I didn't want to have to deal with the light skin and single combs. I've some very pretty silkies to add in some new blood and colors.

Okay, so I got around to taking more pictures of that one sizzle chick. I am pretty sure it's sizzle.. If you disagree, let me know. I got one egg from George's owner the same day I brought him home (knowing I was setting eggs the same day!) and it hatched - along with all 10 of my own silkie eggs (one died) so I know that one of these is not from my own hens. This has to be the one.
