Here are a few pics of my oldest granddaughter and her new baby

This is the same one as in the above post.

It seems Lady Peckington has gone broody. She just wants to sit in the nesting box and face the corner all day long.

I feel bad for her. She keeps stealing eggs and sitting on them, but none are fertile as I have no rooster. Any suggestions on what to do for her? Should I just let her get through it? Get her some fertile eggs to hatch? Kick her butt out of there? She doesn't seem to want to get down to eat or drink on her own unless I make her.

If you don't mind more chicks I would either get her some fertile eggs or sneak some chicks under her in the night. If not, separate her in a pen with food and water but no nesting box. Don't have any bedding type stuff either. She will be upset but eventually her hormones should get in check. I've heard of people dunking broody hens in cold buckets of water but I don't think that would work for sizzles or silkies (they would probably get drenched where as a chicken with smooth barbed feathers has quard feathers that protect them from the water).

Had six more chicks hatch from my sizzle roo George x buff laced polish hen, Harriet on Friday. Their fertility/hatch-ability is the best out of all of my chickens. Have not had one single egg that didn't pip/hatch. My last hatch was awful. Only had two chicks hatch, and both were from these two!

Sadly only one chick has black skin :( How hard is it to breed the dark skin back into them? I will likely keep any females that are frizzled and breed to my silkie rooster Steve. I will breed any female smooth chicks back to their father. All frizzled/smooth males will be sold/given away.

My poor George was going to be put in a show on Friday, but the roosters all picked his tail feathers out. He is now in the grow out pen with Steve and the other silkies. Poor boy.. He keeps crawling under things and acting a fool. He seems traumatized. Anyone experience this, and how do I help him overcome his fear?

He loves me though. He stands all pretty and drops his wing for me. If he was young this would not be tolerated. He is over 2 years old, and very sweet, so I just laugh at him. He especially likes my yellow boots :D

Congrats on the new chicks! It really isn't that hard to breed the black skin into them. I bred my pq sizzle hen to my cochin rooster. That hen doesn't have black eyes like she should but even still, 1 of the offspring out of 7 is solid black. Another of the chicks has black eyes but her skin isn't quite black, it's more charcoal. If you can get the black features out of a pet quality sizzle/cochin then you could get it by a pet quality sizzle/silkie for sure. I would say go for it.

Sorry about your rooster. I have no idea on that front. I'm having rooster problems here myself. Daddy roo keeps trying to kill his babies.

If he doesn't stop this mess, he will be going in the ground before winter comes. That is my #1 reason for not wanting to use a cochin in a sizzle project. Cochin roosters can have a devil streak and that is definitely passed on to the offspring.

Well I got a mate for Dweezle with the hope of correcting his white feet. a nice blue splash silkie girl.
some how "I am still realing over it" two of my grand kids were given silkies!, as well as the oldest getting a sizzle chick!
So as usual I will have to take care of them.

A few questions from the grand kids, they want to raise chickens of their own but not like the egg chickens grandma has.
#1 what coloration would you call this sizzle chick of Autumns "she wanted to know what it would look like grown up"
The sizzle chick appears to be light partridge in color.

The next question they asked is what would happen if their silkies and sizzle had babies? What color would they be?
Roberts "was not sexed there but with the comb protruding as it is in comparison to the 2 probable blue splash pullets" looks to be a cockerell.
I told them the black and the blue splash will make blue but they want to know what will happen with Autumns chick of they had babies.
You could get a variety of colors. There is really no way to tell.

And a quick pic of Dweezle with his new girl! "when he is next to the black silkie he is conciderably lighter so I do not think he is a pure black??" I may have to wait and see what these two produce?
Dweezle is not black in color, he is blue. I can't remember for sure what you would get from a blue by splash breeding. The options, however, would be blue, black, and splash. I think it would be 50% splash, and 50% blue offspring. But again, it's been a while and I could have forgotten.

Suggestions?
Comments??
No suggestions. I just want to say, they are very cute!!

Thank you very much! I will pass on the info to the kids on Autumns color and the fact there is no way to tell with hers what the babies will come out like if she breeds it with the black or the blue splash.
Either way it will be a great experience for the kids even if it makes more work for me

And also thanks for confirming my suspicion Dweezle was indeed not black but blue I cant wait to see what him and Blue Moon produce
"if I can sepperate him from Marys Polish girl!!"

I some times think I am newer to these than the grand kids LOL they have 6 chickens and 3 rabbits here, Mary has around 25 chickens and I got 2 chickens now.
