Good morning all:frow

Olive,  Robin?   Suggestions?   I have a 13 week old pullet with what I think is WRY NECK.  Vet gave me some oral steroids and selenium for her and Keyts' BF is going to drop off some Poly-vitamins for her,  She is still eating but head turned and falling over.  Anything else I can do?  Vet said actually not much hope.
Thanks ladies

IMO your vet is correct. There are a lot of different things you could try but I must agree with your vet. Don't hold out much hope for it. I never had any luck fixing it. Good luck but if it were me I would just put it down.

I gave her some suggestions because I've had 2 rabbits and a few of hens that have had it. We're not even sure that's what it is and even though I haven't seen it I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Aric is taking her some vitamins and a dog crate to separate it. I told her chances are it may not recover but I have brought one rabbit and 2 hens out of it with vitamins and lots of tlc. I didn't know what it was when I had my first rabbit with it, it was Jen who told me about it.

Well, guess I'll go find something to do. Re-organize the tiny bathroom or the bedroom? Go do some photography? Who knows what will win! lol

Here's what i could dig up on wry neck, you may be doing some of this already:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/604522/hen-twisting-her-neck

The first link is a "cure", the second link has a cure and video, a link to other info to make sure that it's not something more sinister. If it is wry neck, it definitely seems to be a vitamin thing, what brand & type of food are you using?

(It's boggling because most cases are chicks............so i would be suspicious of the food, keep her separate in the event it's not. )

Hey Rusty... I had a hen with wry. She actually went broody as the wry started. Part of the problem for her was she was not eating the feed. I had switched from crumbles to pellets and none of the birds would eat the pellets unless they were very hungry. It was also the beginning of winter at the time, so they were getting other things as well, but she was the only one affected by it. Anyway, if you have the time to hand feed and water her so she doesn't drown herself every few hours, along with the vitamins, and adding selenium and vit e, you might be able to reverse it. You do need to have that time to dedicate to this is you want to save her. If you don't have the time, then putting her down would be for the best.

I tried to save my girl, especially since she was sitting on eggs. She got so bad that she her head was over, upside down and facing the wrong way. I didn't have the time to dedicate like she needed and my mom is afraid to even touch them. The feet and beak freak her out. Well anyway, she was so stress out over it herself that when ever she'd try and get out of the nest box for a daily poop, she'd end up all over the place, flapping around, falling over, it was just so heart breaking. She was the first bird I had to cull. Also though, I was lucky at the time, I had another bird go broody, she finished the last 11 days on the eggs.

Anyway, you could go both ways. Good luck. AND, if you decide to do it, I'd suggest getting a red light and only use a white light when it is time for feeding and watering. Be careful with the neck too, you need to be very certain you are moving it the right way. Medicine droppers for kids meds are real nice for feeding mashes..

i did read that stress was a huge part of whether a hen got better or worse...........
Some did better in a dark place by theirselves, and one story the hen was bonded to another so she got too stressed if she was separated from the group.

They MUST be stress free, and kept stress free for at LEAST 2-3 weeks after the neck is "better", before integrating with the flock again, according the the first gal.
Only issue would be heat, if you had a non-heated place for her it would be better. Otherwise it would be a shock going out into the cold in a month............

Well ya'll. I am going to go over to a bud's house and we are going to give my door a jimmy rigging. Oh if only they made duct tape for hinges... I'd be investing! LOL.

Any way. The little chick that I thought for sure was going to not make it, well it still might not, seems to be getting stronger. Criptoe however I think may be suffering a bit of binding... So, yogurt, olive oil and crumbles mashed... what? I swear I have never seen a chicken push so hard to poo. She did finally pass a poo ball, ball, but she darn near fell over doing it. The vent seems fine, I checked. I was worried she'd rupture something... Anyway, with her feet, she's very clutzy getting in and out of the nest box. I removed the nest box, cleaned out all the shavings from the coop, put in fresh and put in the chick feeder and water dish. I am moving all the CS chicks to the 4x8 and the silkie chicks to the grow out coop, and Skeeter and her chick will go into the Bates Motel. I made the partial wall Solid with door that drops down, when open, but locks at the top. I don't think though that it'll be opening much. I figure that will be the perfect spot for Mama's and new chicks. It have a run to it, so... Yeah. Good for chickies.

AND poor Skeeter is molting. OMG! There is a feather explosion in the garage. I thought at first it was from Skeet fighting with the other chickens to stay away, but when I picked her up last night, she left me feather presents. Yup. Poor thing. I hope its not going to be a hard molt... She's got a baby to keep warm. I am going to give a 75 watt heat lamp for her at night till she feathers back out, especially on those nights like last night. BURRR!

Any whoo... SO, If'n you come up to MI for a dog Silver, you gotta bring me them Favs. Not to RBahmer... she has enough. LOL
