The Supreme Court's Gun Ruling This Week - Not A Debate

I just wanted to say I'm impressed that this topic has remained so civil. I've found it a very interesting read. For the record, I'm a Quaker and a pacifist, and about as liberal as they come--but I absolutely support a law-abiding citizen's right to keep a gun. Yeah, you figure me out...

I actually own a few guns and I'm a pretty decent shot (or was at one time. I imagine myself a bit rusty at this point). I obviously am against violence of any sort, but I do break with my pacifist beliefs when it comes to protecting yourself and your family if necessary.

If we lived in a perfect world we wouldn't need guns (for personal protection). But obviously this ain't no paradise.

So y'all keep your guns, and know that all of us who swing left aren't against your right to do so.

We have rifles and shotguns and a BB gun. Kids have rifles, shotguns and handguns. If they try and take away my guns I will shoot them! DH says they will just tax the ammo so much it will take away our ability to buy ammo, so we keep well stocked.

I also agree with the 2nd and the right to carry. I have a loaded Taurus handgun on the dresser as well as a Rem 870 in the living room to protect the flock need be when they are out living free.

This is a basic freedom that should never be taken away....

If it would happen....here comes the revolution!

Courthouses and schools in large cities are not "gun free" they are carried by people trained and paid to use them. As far as "gun" club mass killings.......ok.

Metal detectors work and if ANY person running it, allows ANYONE by w/out checking what it is, would be fired. I would report them in an instant.

Guns will not make a crook act legal, it'll make him change his tactics. Most people that are "mass" killers w/a gun expect to die in a blaze of glory. Criminals fear nothing.

I don't want stop people from owning guns, I just don't want them carrying around my kids, unless they are professionals. No john wayne wanna be's.

I sorta agree with Seedcorn on people meeting a certain criteria before "having the
right" to bear a handgun.

This whole Supreme Court thing was about handguns, not rifles, and I think we
all recognize the difference between the two.

I was sorta on the fence about handguns being covered under the 2nd ammendment
but after reading some of the opinions here I believe they are truly covered under that
ammendment.

Let me ask this. How do we take guns out of the hands of criminals or others who
under the law should not be in possession of such weapons? While there are
exceptions I think we all agree the vast majority of gun crimes are commited by
those with illegal guns. Or is this just a stupid question?

Seedcorn, you are insulting every legal gun owner with your 'John Wayne Wannabe' labels.

Here in MA you have to pass a gun safety course, a background check, etc. to get a concealed carry permit, if you live in the right town (the gun laws are so bad here in one town you can get one, the next one you can't. Up to the police chief. How constitutional is that?). I am proficient with all of my firearms. I've trained with them. I am no John Wayne Wannabe. You are the one who seems to be thinking along movie lines, the rest of us are quietly carrying out our right to defend ourselves. And if we're good about it, you'll never, ever even know we're armed. That's what concealed carry is all about.

PurpleChicken, one way to cut down on gun crime is to actually enforce the laws that are already on the books. Here in MA it's a mandatory one year sentence for possession of an unregistered gun. As far as I know there isn't one person in jail for breaking that law. Why not? Because they use it as a plea bargaining point

Lock the gun toting gang bangers up when they're caught (once again) with a gun. Don't try to pile on more and more rules and regulations onto legal, law abiding gun owners. It does nothing to stop the bad guys.

I know a few people like this. Their guns are an extention of their ego and identity.
Seed did repeat that sterotype a few times but I don't think was referring to anyone
here. If Seed was a raving antigun fanatic I'd feel differently but that isn't the
impression I am getting. Just my 2 cents (448 more you get a gallon of gas).

That makes total sense on enforcing existing laws.

You're saying no one has gotten the one year term for a firearm in MA???
Here I am thinking I'd go to jail if I crossed the line with my little LEGAL 25c.

1) Are you really that scared that you have to carry a handgun on you when going to a school? The area you live in is that dangerous? If so, do what you have to do. Here in Indiana, we're friendly and don't need to carry guns.

2) Lived by Chicago, left. Didn't want to raise my kids in such crime infested area or live there for that matter.

3) Insulted........only if that is your motivation to carry or identify with him. I have no problem w/someone that has need to carry and is trained.

4) Funny none of you that advocate carrying concealed handguns around schools, have responded how the west was tamed by NOT allowing hand guns in towns.
