The Sussex thread!

If it was me i would breed both. (don't want to sound pushy or anything)

i would breed that cock to the first hens See what they produce. I defiantly think they would produce sussex with a deep keel (important in the sussex breed. Coming from there dorking backgrounds) Use these these for the size of this colour. And breed the same cock to the second pullet to get the colour of Mille Fleur(sp?). Then breed your best birds from those mattings

Finally got a few shots of some of my light sussex girls that are still filling the rest of their tails from molt. The rest are in the middle of molting (so excuse the feathers everywhere), and they need a good bath before they go to show in a few weeks. I know they still need work, combs esp, but am happy with how they are coming along over the last two hatching seasons. I know you frequent the thread from time to time Don, think the body type is coming along alright?

I took some pictures of two of the Mille Fleur Project Pullets and my cockerel who is younger than the pullets.

The first pullet is more plain and taller and I think will be larger.

The second pullet is lower set and fluffier and showing more mottling,

Here is a front shot of my cockerel

Here he is from the side

Very cool birds!

That second pullet is very pretty.

Are these the only 3 birds you have to work with? What are your plans for the next step of the project?

They're beautiful so far, good work.

Mom in a way gave me the go ahead to raise a lot of Sussex! We were in the car disscusing about what i well do with the cockerels from this hatch. She asked if we were gonna eat them i was like YAH! So now in my mind (hehe) that means i can grow out as many as i want!

And that's how i can twist the words my family says in to what i *want* to hear!

Vicki, They look to have a nice wide back all the way back and they have plenty depth. I would select a male with a nice wide open tail to put over these to open up the tail a little.
I have some other comments but will put them in a PM.

sounds good Don. I have my original male, who is a half naked molty mess right now that has a nice tail (when he has one), a coro male in a trio I own with my uncle, and have several younguns growin out that I'm waiting to see development on. The youngest are around 3 weeks old, so it will be a while before I see how they all stack up against each other.

these are my silver sussex.....I got 1 roo and 2 pullets.....they are 4 1/2 months. I am starting to think that mine are not even close to being true silvers. And their temperment is not what I expected either. The roo has just started getting aggressive with us and our dog and 1 of the pullets chases my cats every chance she gets. They are HUGE birds though.

Ok fellow Sussex owners is this normal? I have a Speckled Sussex hen. She's about a year and a half old and going through a molt. Her new feathers that are coming in are mostly white !?

Before the molt

Same hen. You can see all the new white feathers.
