The Sussex thread!

Oi!! Why so much? Were they suppose to be show quality breeders? I must be out of touch with the going rate.

I would be demanding a replacement for the blind one from the breeder. No excuse for that.
Best,
Karen
Not sure why so much, they just looked pretty to me. They were not show quality, i was shocked to hear how much they were. I would never pay that much for just 3 pretty girls. He doesn't have contact with the person as it was at a auction.

Hi, I have a chance to buy show quality light, silver and coronation sussex but really want to know how they are as egg layers. ( living in the city egg count is important as we are my allowed so many birds) what one would you recomend, and if not tese how about golden laced or silver laced brahama's ? I love the look of the light susex but really need a good layer as Montana gets cold and I do not want a bird that stops laying over winter.

Her are my new sussexs

Occasionaly i get 2 eggs from one chicken!

Here are pix of our two new girls - 8 weeks. Wondering if anyone that has kept the different varieties over the years has noticed a difference in egg production between speckled, light, or others? We're hoping to get some Coronation next time.

Brahmas are very cold hardy but not typically big egg producers. I don't think they lay through winter either. A Sussex should definitely out-lay them and would consume less feed too.

Quote: Hi,
I have Montana bred Light Sussex. Got them from Walt Boese. They arrived Dec. 1st of last year at 10 months old. Got a trio. The boy was hatched 11/2011; March was hatched 3/12; May was hatched 5/12. Yeah, I named the girls after the months they were hatched. Both girls laid all winter long. Even in blizzard conditions. I do keep an 85 watt light on 24/7 in the 4x6 foot coop to keep the boy's comb from freezing. March-hatched Sussex are the best winter layers. Traditionally, the Light Sussex is the best layer of all the varieties in the breed.
Best,
