The Sussex thread!

I love my SS hen but she doesn't lay as much as my others. Would like to get some more. Have to replace our rooster though.

I have three SS hens and one pullet. Only two were laying, but earlier in the week I got a pullet egg. I started collecting eggs last Friday or Saturday, and today I got the 11th egg. So 11 eggs in 5-6 days, that's not too bad. Not like my layers who give a big brown egg every day regardless of weather. My SS are really particular about the weather.

Yes she hasn't given me any eggs since pct. Prob won't lay again until it reaches 40s

Bought 5 one day old speckled sussex strait run chicks (now 5 days old) . I lost two due to the trip home. Very displeasing but Its nature at its finest I suppose. My three that are left are amazingly healthy it seems curious always pecking at the brooder real loud like its very cute. They are pretty skittish and sine the move beat them senseless I didn't want to handle them too much due to fear of Making them more sick. But they are fine now. Is there any thing I can do to get them to warm up to me? Lol they seem very freakin independent haha should give them plain yogurt by hand or something? Take them outside on a Nice day under watchful eye of course and not for too long. Oh and when can I expect to see hen and roo traits I hope their not all roos :/ anyways i love speckled Sussex and I am so into this thread :)

Honestly, I am no chicken expert, but whenever I have had this issue I spend extra one on one with the bird. I suggest grabbing one at a time and spending at least 10 min with each chick. Make sure that the 10minuted begin when the bird is calm. Do this as much as possible with each bird. If you can, get colored bands for the legs to tell them apart from each other.

They will not be ok to sell as Sussex, because they are mixed. All the resulting chicks will be mixed to some extent.

Just sell them as mixed.
