My speckled sussex will be 21 weeks tomorrow. Her comb is getting redder

how long is it after their comb starts turning red that they lay?

Maybe try the retired priest. I liked the loom of his birds. If you want to show, stay away from th Pure Australian birds. They are too large for APA shows here in the USA and get disqualified on penalty points for size alone before anything else is considered. I have this from a veteran APA Judge who knows Sussex well. Basically the Australian Sussex were brought here by Greenfire Farms to add diversity and size to our smaller more inbred USA Light Sussex. When they are carefully interbred with the USA birds a nice moderate bird results. However, we need to be careful the resulting birds aren't too loose feathered. The Light Sussex is a soft feather bird. But it is also in England and North America, a close feathered breed. In other words when you look at the bird in profile, the feathering should be close enough that you can see definition of the thighs. They are not hidden by the birds fluffy "pantaloons" as we see in the Orpingtons. I agree that the Australian birds are not SOP in the states. They are big & beautiful if you just want some eye candy.

Thanks! In the mornings, I have a difficult time getting my 3 sons up for school, so... In comes Peck. She walks from room to room bawk... bawk... BEGOCK-ing until everyone is awake (and usually laughing) So I guess we are the lucky ones... Lol She takes pretty good care of us!

We have a Coro Sussex & lav orp mix. My son named the chick "MINE." Later he named her "Nemo". She's used to being handled by young kids & may even enjoy it.






Nemo's over 5 months now & just got home from a bike ride. Other than constantly being underfoot, she's a pretty good chicken. Still waiting for that 1st egg. I have a feeling we'll have many stories to share about this one.
