The Sussex thread!

:lau I'll have to try that some time! We have a Coro Sussex & lav orp mix. My son named the chick "MINE." Later he named her "Nemo". She's used to being handled by young kids & may even enjoy it. Nemo's over 5 months now & just got home from a bike ride. Other than constantly being underfoot, she's a pretty good chicken. Still waiting for that 1st egg. I have a feeling we'll have many stories to share about this one.
What an adorable little pair they make! She looks like she is very much enjoying all the attention from her buddy!

so sweet..

24 weeks today and still no eggs :( I really hope I see an egg soon. Her comb is nice and red and her personality started changing, shes become friendly!!! it's a big deal, because she wouldn't let me get near her before. I am hoping that's a sign she is getting closer to lay. I also have an easter egger the same age and no eggs and a silkie 7months and I doubt she will give me an egg until the spring.

I have 5 girls, 2 are layers. But only one of my girls has been generous to give us an egg everyday. I had to go and buy eggs :(

Glad your hens are getting friendly. That is a sign of getting closer.

The problem is the time of year. With less hours of sunlight, the start of laying has been delayed. (My 1st EEs started at 28 weeks, which was in late Jan. The next year I hatched earlier & they started between 17-21 weeks, which fell in August.)

Below is another Sussex mix that is now 6 months. She's 1/2 English orp & 1/2 Coro Sussex. (Sister to my son's Nemo pictured above.) Both breeds can take up to 8 mo before laying. Definitely kept for personality & not their egg laying abilities.

Once she starts squatting & hanging around in the nest boxes, I'll get excited.

The shorter days have definitely slowed down laying, my Amerucana pullet who is the only one who has been laying because she is older the others, we haven't got an egg from her for a while and the younger girls have not started yet. We are figuring out the lighting.
