Well, I don't know, Scott .... but I will tell you what I have noticed. This probably supports what you have heard. I have a heat light on my younger Coronations and notice that ALL of them (and the splits) seem to stay where the heat is. Unlike the other breeds who go outside more. It isn't THAT cold, barely freezing, yet they seem to be cold. ???

Kathy do you have all the best chickens in the world? Every thread of the best chickens in the world, there you are.

(where are your EEs?

I am in WI - My Lights and Split Lights from Greenfire do seem to stay in the barn more, but I do not give any of my birds any lights, as I do not want them laying. But havent lost any so far! They are from AU, then to FLORDIA. Im sure it will take a few years to harden the stock off to COLD weather.

Thanks Kathy and for the pictures, I wish it was easier for me to put pictures on here. I never thought about what you said Nate but you are probably right. I really like the Sussix's they have such a nice personality and I like big birds.

Yeah, when I ordered them I had already expected to have some losses over the winter, but with any birds that are "used" to a warm climate, it will take some time to get them adjusted is what I have heard. I havent lost any yet, so we will see how they do over the winter. I have over 30 of the AU sussex, but only time will tell.

Nate

My Light Sussex are always out in the snow, way more than the others, except maybe the Orloffs.

The Sussex rooster is out there so much that he has gotten terrible frost bite on his feet (last winter) and I have to really watch him now because I think the feeling in his feet is messed up now...so he stands out in the snow for hours.

Oh and my little coronation pullet runs out, drinks water and then runs back into the coop...so does my little light sussex pullet.

I have 3 Light Sussex layers that have no Australian blood in them, and they are fine in the cold. ALL 16 of my Coronation and Splits act like they are freezing, and spend most of their time under the heat lamp. That is the difference, I am seeing.

Hi there, I have a young LS (Charlie) that was supposed to be a pullet. When I posted pictures on the "What Gender" forum, everyone seemed to think it was a roo. It's approx 15-16weeks, and although it is the largest of the 6 chickens we have, it's also at the bottom of the pecking order (with the smallest silkie being at the top, weird birds). I was just wondering if that would be typical of a LS Roo of approx 15-16weeks? So far I have seen no rooish behaviour from it, whereas the 2 previous roos we had, were clearly identifiable by behaviour by this age. I don't have a recent photo, this is from approx 2 weeks ago,

I think that the lack of tail feathers were because they'd been plucked out, as the SLW we got at the same time was also missing all the feathers on her back between her wings as was Charlie. And they were bald not just fuzzy bald. Oh and I'm in Australia if that makes a difference.
