The Sussex thread!

Pics
Beautiful Rooster James!

I am not a fan of white birds, but sure could get a liking to these because of their breed! So cute. Love all the pictures.

Glad to see this thread again, I was planning to post on it and then forgot!

That's a beautiful Sussex with the light grey feathers.

Here's my Speckled Sussex roo KP and hen Dolly. They were 10 months old when these were taken last month. Dolly was not being cooperative!

These pictures are from last summer, I will have to get some new ones once it warms up a bit. I have a Buff Sussex and a Red Sussex. The Buff (Peach) is really timid and was the smallest of all my pullets when I got them. Now she is the biggest, but still bottom of the pecking order. Penny (the Red) is sweet and very curious. Anyone else have a Red Sussex? I never see posts about them.

I know this is stupid before I even ask it but I have a mystery egg on my hands. Three days ago I integrated my 2 light Sussex pullets and one roo in with my laying flock of 7 hens. Yesterday morning I found a mystery egg in one of the top nest boxes, the ones my girls NEVER use. It was a very light cream color, small and pointy. I only had one hen laying at the time and she lays a dark brown egg. None of my other girls lay cream colored eggs. I know it can't be my Sussex yet, can it? I am unsure of their exact age. Paul Bradshaw said 4-6 weeks when they were shipped the third week in November. These were the largest of the hens. Their combs are still pink. But I can't figure out where this egg came from. Today I got eggs from 5 hens and none looked like this one. It can't be the other two because one is an EE and the other a Marans. So I pulled up the pics of some light Sussex hatching eggs I bought and most of them were the same cream color. So my dumb question is this; what is the very earliest a hen could start laying? Is is possible the egg came from this hen? Here is the young couple and the mystery egg.

OK, mystery solved. Turken finally started laying again and her eggs are lighter and smoother than before. I think this was her egg.

Be kind to me. I'm old and dumbfounded.

Well, my red and black sex links started laying at 14 - 15 weeks old. But, they got real red in the face prior to laying (which is a sign of impending laying). I don't think your Sussex has a very red comb yet ... still looks pink to me. Hmmm, I dunno ...

One of my FBCM hens is already doing squats and laying in the nests and you cant really even see her comb and it isnt red at all. I dont know if this will help you at all.. but just thought i would share!
