The Sussex thread!

Wait... they do!!
You'll want to be looking for Speckled Sussex strains coming from Rev. Ashbrook, Gary Overton, The Mongold's , or a strain which is a composite of 2 or more of these strains. All three strains are top show quality bantam Speckled Sussex. In Speckled Sussex, especially, since they are a tri-color variety, you want to start out with quality stock.
Especially in Sussex, production qualities are an intregral part of breed type. The most typey birds should be your most productive birds. Having the right structure for meat and the right structure for eggs.

Is everyone up for a techinical question??

SInce the sussex are a single comb, was the area of development a mild climate without many days at or below freezing? I feel positively ignorant having to ask what the weather is like in England. I was there only once and on the first night it snowed in London-- I remember only because the convertible parked on the street below our hotel had left the roof down. OOOPS. WE laughed and thought it was funny--HS students all.

As far as I've been able to read and look at climates England is very similar to the Pacific Northwest weather pattern. Remember most of England has a coast line fairly nearby. Milder winters, much rain, fog. Not that all of our winters hear are mild especially at our house as we are in a higher elevation. We have had several single comb breeds and in over 30 years, most of the time with only a regular light bulb in our chicken house, we have only had a handful of frostbit victims (combs only). My pullets all have small combs and my cockerels had fairly compact, not tall, combs also. Hope that helps.

Just a little update on my Gold Mille Fleur project. Here is a photo of one of the GMF pullets and her light sussex uncle, this pair will be one half of this years breeding. The other half is a GMF cockerel and two light sussex hens.
