Does anyone have the Speckled Sussex breed standard? We need it for the county fair but I really dont want to buy the book just for that.

I have a Light Sussex broody. Is this common? She is young, and has only been laying for a couple months. She seems determined, so I gave her a few eggs.

Hi all;

After doing my homework I'm convinced the Light or Buff Sussex is exactly what I need. The info Ive read (I did read all 30-odd pages on this thread) and the pictures, WOW you folks have some absoultely amazing birds, have really sold me on the Sussex. Your descriptions and the breed standard are exactly what I've been looking for.

Couple of quick questions though. For those keeping both the light and the buff, are the buff the same size when mature, and growing at the same rate as their light cousins? Is it the same bird in all regards except color? I keep reading about how some folks have had issues with size and in the SS thats why I'm asking. I can't decide which color I like better but if the Buff don't grow and mature out like their Light cousins that will make the decision for me. I love that big, stately bird thats why I'm asking.

Also can the Light or Buff be shown in 4H? Ive got a 2 y.o. daughter who all too soon will want to enter them I'm sure and I want to be sure we're working with something that she could enter there. I'm sure she'll want some other birds too, but I figured Id let her hatch some eggs so she had "her birds" to enter if she wants. If not it won't keep me from raising them, Ill just have to expand the coop and build another run for whatever she wants when the time comes.

I just wanted to pop in and say, my first chicken flock was Speckled Sussex - and I loved them!

I no longer have any SS, but I did just bring home two young pairs of Coronation Splits over the weekend. They should be laying by fall, and I'm hoping to hatch some lovely birds from them. Their parents are birds from Greenfire Farms.

I am new to Sussex but here is my observations.


The buff lag a bit in growth behind the lights. Mine buffs are only about 8- 10 weeks old but I see some difference.
The Lights are definitely seem more hardy as babies.

Hi there-
I seen Paul Bradshaw from Greenfire is selling Light Sussex split to Silver. I have emailed him several times asking what you would get when crossed with the light sussex, does anyone on here know, Im guessing that it would be a small percent of silvers, but I was just wondering.

It looks like you will get some silvers,now breeding them back together you will get silvers,lights and even black patterned silver partridge.So you will have to do some breeding to clean em up....
