I got my 6 9 week old now Speckled Sussex from Estes hatchery also. I ordered pullets, I go back and fourth, one day I think I have all pullets and the other I think there may be a roo or two in the mix. Time will tell.
I actually ordered 6 black maran pullets, 6 Welsummer pullets and also 6 Salmon Favorelle pullets. Out of that bunch I ended up with 2 black Maran roo's. One I will keep and the other I will move along.

I would make the pop hole 14 wide and 18 tall and the nest boxes 13 square
Wow that is a very large pop hole, we have hot summers and cold windy winters here. I think that size -it will be facing north- will make it very drafty in the coop. can we make it smaller for winter?

Sure you can make the hole smaller...if you want the males to sleep outside at night. Even some older hens need that much room. Go ahead and make a smaller hole, but you will have to make a bigger hole when they get mature. Maybe you could install something like a doggie door.

I use a 9 or 11 inch round hole, My sussex go though with no problem, in fact when I had turkeys and geese they also went though the same hole. my holes are on the north side and I have not had any problems in the winter but my drop door is much bigger than the hole. this last winter inside the barn was around 15 warmer than the outside

I just double mine ..... 2 doors. One inside and one outside. Keeps the draft out pretty well.
Wow, I'm so glad I found this thread! I have a 9 week old Speckled Sussex named Freckles; she's the sweetest chicken I've ever had. Is that a common trait for Sussex; a sweet nature gene to go with the speckles?
