The Sussex thread!

Hi,
I am working on a project. I need some input, please. Color doesn't matter, neither does strain.
Only weight is a factor. Yes & No answers are fine. Those of you with hens (not pullets) over
7 pounds, how many eggs are you getting as a general rule:
1. per bird for a week?

2. Per bird for a month?

3. As a general rule, is the laying per bird continoius or does it come in sparadic intervals
during laying season?

Thanks so much!

I had 3 hens over 7 lbs, now just one. All 3 laid at a nice consistent basis of about 6 eggs per week, however, broodiness is a serious variable that stopped laying a lot, and broke it into segments. Same goes for molting. My girls love to go broody, and they love to molt after broodiness too, so aside from that they're good layers but put that into place and they're poor layers.

I have a quad of coronation sussex and I think they are beautiful in general, but they always have dirty tail feathers. I have a big dusting area with sand for the flock and they all seem to use it and keep clean. Are sussex just too fluffy on the back end to not keep clean? If I have to trim feathers or that sort of thing I will get rid of them. I don't have fluffy butts for that reason!!!
And yes, I do worm my flock routinely. They are healthy.

I culled many sussex last year to keep three pullets and one cockeral. Its been raining alot here, but I haven't noticed the sussex being more dirty than the other breeds. I hatched out over 500 birds last year of about 7 different breeds, and I can say the coronation sussex feather out faster, start laying sooner and lay more often than black, lavender and buff orpingtons, and brahma's. I have got atleast 19 eggs a week from the three since they started laying. They have layed just as good as my production reds so far. Of course being as they are only around 8 months old, I don't know the yearly average yet. So far, they are the best dual purpose bird I've had in a long time.

Hi, this may not help since I'm in Aus but I have a single Silver Sussex hen and she's 16 months old now and lays a distinctive egg. Since she started laying she's laid me an egg a day, barely missing a day right up till she went broody last month.

I hope her daughters lay as well as she has!

Edit: Re-read and see you didn't want pullet info but I will be taking note when she starts laying again to see how well she does in the future.

I want to say that today I picked up two large light beige/tan eggs from my coronations out of 4 hens. I caught one in the act so I know whose egg was whose for sure. It was the largest egg I picked up today with the welsummer being a distant second. The ameraucan pullet eggs are very small but so pretty and a contrast with the marans, wellies and sussex eggs in the basket.
The eye candy is paying off

I love my coronations, they are such sweet gentle giants

I'm looking for show quality speckled sussex. Does anyone have a source?

Good luck on finding any. Tony Albritton and Gary Overton are the only 2 I know of for sure but Gary only sells adults in the Fall if I remember correctly.
