The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

So sorry for the death chick and your loss.

How come you are not sure it is or isn’t Haris. ?

Cant you can put the Serama babies in a cardboard box with many holes for ventilation at night? That probably reduces the chance something goes wrong a second time.

Thank you. I don't think it was the LFs. The other ones are healthy, just scraggly. Might be something else.

As you might remember, Haris and number three looked very alike. As they grew, they looked almost identical. The only way I could tell them apart is by the size difference. Now that one's gone, it makes it even harder. I have a feeling Haris is the one that left us though...

I'm so sorry Fluffy :hugs
Oh no! I am sorry for your loss. :hugs Do you know what caused it? I would suggest separating them-find anything that could work if you can. It might not have died from trampling, it could have been totally random like a heart attack. Either way, it is not your fault!

Thank you both. I really don't think it was trampling. Especially if Haris is the one that's gone. That chick had a lot of life and spunk in her. She could take down an LF chick on a bad day

RIP little Haris.. gone way too soon

The chicks are doing good. No more
I have two questions:
  1. How are the chicks doing, Fluffy?
  2. Sorry to intrude on this thread, but I know there are people I can trust here that have a lot of good information. How do you eliminate so many flies? The chicken poop is bringing in a lot of flies and I want to know how I can repel them.

deaths so far. The brooder plate has been taken out, and in two or three days, the LFs will move to the coops. More room and freedom for the serama babies!

Not much to comment on with flies, don't have a huge issue with them personally. The first years of chicken keeping the flies were very much a problem, I used fly traps, the kind that they fall in and can't escape. Now, I don't do anything

Fly season... 😖

We use the Rescue fly bags, or as I fondly call them, gag bags. The amount of flies it draws in is both amazing and disgusting 🤮 🤣 .
They've been on sale at tsc, 2 for $10.

I also sprinkle some pdz around in the coop to help minimize any smell so they don't go in the coop as much.

Attract lots of Dutch farmers and flower growers who use an abundant lot of pesticides and other toxins to destroy the bugs on their crops and in the soil. We have only 25% of the original amount of insects in the Netherlands because of all the round up and other poisons.

Serious: You have my blessings to import our farmers and flower growers, bc then my country will be more healthy again in due time.
Every year the farmers continue, we have less flies, mosquitoes, bees, etc. Keep in mind there is a counterpoint. We have a disturbing increase of neurological diseases.
Please stop buying Dutch lilies, because they are the worst pesticides consuming crop and exported a lot.

Sorry, just read an article about this stupid lily business again. And felt the need to shout. 😒

Oh my gosh, that's terrible! I hope they somehow can decrease the chemical dependence.

It lacks the political will to do anything about it. The pesticide company has an overwhelming lobby apparatus to convince politicians in EU to maintain the allowance of the use of toxins despite what doctors ask for , for our health. And beekeepers for their honey bees and …..

The farming industry in my country and in Europe is very mighty. And lots of civilians seem to think they cant eat meat anymore in the future if they vote for the people who want to protect the environment.

Geez, that's bad. I wish more people understood sustainable farming for crops and meat and the negative impact of the herbicides and pesticides used en masse. No bees, no food, no food and people get really nasty.

We get local farm raised beef and are now starting to process our own chickens. Baby steps. We are trying to eat all organic (as much as we can) even "organic" isn't perfect but it's not like we have and lobbying power to make an impact nationally.

Big birds have been moved to the coops, and the bitties are loving all that space! Miss Mayhem and the rest of the oldies did not appreciate the new chicks. By nightfall, the disappointment was universal, since the young'uns had started roosting in the chick pen. I bet they were quire mad when they found out they couldn't roost where they used to :p
