The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

Wow! You've had so many broody girls! Part of me wants to witness it - babies being raised by mama hen (instead of me). But, I'm sure that the uncertainty of it all would make me Cuckoo for Coco Puffs - the waiting, hoping they hatch, hoping the hen will mother properly and not murder the babies, the sexing .

Ha! I always say I've had very few! It's been only a year and a few months since my very first broody, so I'm very new to this whole this.

I much prefer the broody route. It is so much better for the chicks to be raised by mum, and it's not more stressful for the human compared to artificial incubation

Of course, it is very different from purchasing chicks from hatcheries. It's part of chickening, here

I hope soon enough you'll get to experience the full broody experience, maybe with some of the bantams you'll get soon

I'm not sure if I'll ever keep a rooster. I only order pullets and I prefer sex-linked or autosexing breeds (but I have ordered some that aren't, so I may get a whoopsie roo and I don't know what I'd do in that case! Probably fall in love with it ).

Time will tell. If I do end up in a broody hatching situation, I hope you're prepared for the barrage of questions I'll be throwing at you!

If you're allowed to keep a rooster, you should definitely try it sometime.

It's truly wonderful to see a mature, confident rooster interact with his girls.

Bantam cochins are usually wonderful roosters

I'd be happy to help with broody questions! Although I do hope more experienced peeps will also chime in to help; one year isn't much experience !

See, I know that if I get an accidental cockerel, I'm not going to be able to get rid of it (unless he's a real arse). I get so attached to my babies!

Be glad that he'll be raised under a multi-generational group! Seriously, senior hens don't tolerate juvenile crap regardless of gender, but they are particularly tough on the boys

This is true. Simba acts tough but the bigger girls show him who's boss if he tries to court them. Lol.

Sorry I’m late! Actually, Fluffy… EVVIE! But, she is only 1/2 Serama (the other 1/2 is Mille Fleur d’Uccle). She’s currently in total mama beast mode, protecting a single egg. My “little shadow” growls at every shadow, every change in lighting, any sound at all. She is protecting that egg at all costs in her little broody box inside the growout room of the quail building. To her credit, she will allow me to remove the egg for candling without my hands getting massacred.

For my pure Serama females… I haven’t had one YET in mama beast mode. Beautiful Foureira is going to be an excellent protector. My girls are sweet (maybe too sweet), and they don’t show that broody fire. That may be due to lots of handling as they were growing. Clovie, for example, lets me lift her, pet her, take her egg to candle. All she does to react is cheep a little for me disturbing her sleep. I always remove my broody girls from the flock while they’re incubating, because they get walked all over by other hens wanting in their nests.

Your Foureira will be a terrific mother. Seramas are known for that.

Maybe Foureira is the outcast, and the broody serama fire isn't that fiery after all. What can I say, I named her appropriately

I hope she does. Today is day 19, if I'm not mistaken. I hope at least one egg hatches, she's worked hard for it
