Hi DobieLover,
I meant a ramp, we have them but they seem alien to them. Which they are.
I'm hoping the new coop will encourage new things from them all and I'm building a largish coop as we won't stay at just 6, the women here are crazy!
Bklue, we sometimes call Isabella (I think?) I love the colour. We have , as you've guessed 1 black and 3 (nutter) browns.

Try offering mealworms to the girls. All chickens love mealies. Spread them along the ramp and encourage them up and down the ramp. They'll get the hang of it quick enough.

Your poor girls have probably never had the chance to perch on anything in their lives so it's gonna feel weird for them. In fact, they might even be more comfortable sleeping in the nest boxes but don't let them do it. That can lead to poopy eggs and other complications from dirty bottoms. (That's also why all store-bought eggs are washed and bleached before they're sold). Chickens should lay clean eggs. They have a natural sealant (called bloom) that protects the contents from bacteria and also allows the eggs to stay fresh without refrigeration, but once washed, that protection is gone.

You can help them learn to roost by maybe lowering the height to just a few inches from floor level. Check on them after dusk and place them onto the bar if necessary. Make sure nobody is sleeping in the nests... you might have to block the nests just before sunset to encourage the hens to choose the roost on their own. After a week (maybe longer since it's so foreign to them) they should get the hang of it, then you can try raising the roosts higher.
