The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Are they pure welsummer?

yes, the pen has only had the 5 Welsummer girls, 1 Cuckoo Marans girl and the 2 Welsummer boys, DH and I cracked open a couple Welsummer eggs for breakfast and think we are seeing a bullseye spot- so we thought why not test. DD(11) doesn't think so as the boys are younger(roughly 4 months).

Hens and Chooks! Best of all luck with your eggs!

Hens~ Nice birds!

Robin~ Hope you and your family are feeling better.

Nate~ Thanks and no problem!

I will be setting 2 eggs today also that my youngest pullet who has just started laying gave me over the last couple of days along with some Blue Copper, Splash Copper and Black Copper eggs and 3 olive eggs. Just going to hatch along for the NYD hatch but not enter the contest.

Wellie eggs are top right corner.

You'd be suprised at how early the little boys will do their job - When i first got my welsummer bantams, I didnt even know they were of age at like 4-5 months, and the hens hatched out eggs on thanksgiving and christmas, and didnt even know they were setting, as they laid in the PIGEON NEST BOXES IN THE RAFTERS - and they still managed to hatch out 100%, and didnt loose any chicks. Keep in mind, I am in WI!!! I have no idea how they kept their eggs from not freezing, but they did, to be laying in Oct and Nov, in WI and not freeze, and still hatch. The welsummer bantams are the best setters/moms/layers I have had in bantams!!!

I have some boys who are about the same age as yours, and trying to breed the younger hens, and I still have them all in my brooder shed, on chick starter.

It sounds like a bantam farm here now, with all of my younger roosters starting to crow, and I have like 20+ roosters, and they all just started crowing in the last week. LOL

Figured it couldn't hurt and we'll know in 5-7 days from now!

Pink Kim beautiful eggs. and Nate, I am fighting the urge to order from the spring hatch. It is not practical but OH so tempting to have some beautiful bantam Wellies.

They are great! And I have the very rare and sought after 2008 import birds - Amestein Bloodline. One of the roosters in this pen will be THE ORIGINAL import rooster of the Amestein bloodline.

I am also be going to be offering some chicks/eggs from my *NEW* 2010 import rooster - and will be over Amestein Hens.

They are great setters - and lay a big egg for a bantam - its almost/about the same size as my light sussex eggs!!! Way bigger than any other bantam eggs I have seen. They are not as dark as the LF welsummers, but they do come with the lovely darker speckles! I banded some birds this year that hatched out of the speckled eggs to see if that is passed on, to help make eggs darker.

Hi guys, so I've now been to a whopping two APA poultry shows. Not a Welsummer in sight. An old timer I spoke with said he's never seen them at shows. Do you guys show? I've read a lot of the thread - not sure if anyone has talked about showing them, if so I apologize. I know you all have some nice birds

We just hatched out some from eggs we got from Nate this past Aug. 2 of my kids are planning to show them at fair for 4-H, it was one of the breeds that we didn't see many if any at the fair here. My kids have only done one show and the birds were just babies so they weren't shown. The birds we have are a page or two back.

I am so in love with my little #18 that just started laying........WooooooooWhooooooo. Her egg color is fantastic. She is the one that gave me the two eggs in the photo on the last page. Couldn't help myself and put the egg she gave me yesertday in the 'bator too because it was so pretty and the speckles are to die for. A nice dark Wellie egg with nice dark speckles......I am in heaven!!!!!!!
