.....first, my most beloved #18 and last night I find my oldest and only original hen #10 egg bound. Brought her in the house and she had 2 warm soaks in the tub...but to no avail, this morning I found that she had passed. Upon a little more investigation the egg had broken inside of her. I wish she had shown some more signs and earlier than last night, but she did not, though I did not see her yesterday morning when I let everyone out for the day, but then there are always scragglers who are still sitting in the nest box or eating in the coop and they take their time coming out so I didn't even think to go in and look for all of the birds.

I'm so sorry Kim.

I too am having issues, not in the wellie coop, but the barnevelder coop. Something is getting in the run and in the past 2 weeks I've lost 2 barnie pullets. I think it's a bobcat - I'm going out today to get a trap and hopefully get rid of the problem.

Happy Chooks, I'm in your area and have a predation question, do bobcats hunt during the day? Am i ok letting my flock free range, bout 1/4 acre surrounded with electrified fence? Will secure at night because of cougar/bear and have already seen the Poppa Fox running around. Hope my birds make it round here.

for those who lose their beloved Wellies...its hard!

And yes, bobcats do hunt during the day but most cases, they like to hunt at dawn or dusk which it is cooler. When wildlife are slim pickings, they will go after the domiscated animals for easy pickings.

Not only did 2 of my 3 year-old hatchery Wellies go broody this year (on non-fertile eggs), but I was even able to graft guinea keets onto one of them. If they do so again next season, I'll be able to put some of the eggs from my new Pink Wellies under them as well as in the incubators.

I've seen bobcats and foxes out during the day, so I think they do. Whatever is getting them is climbing a 6 ft fence in and out. No sign of feathers anywhere, just *poof* gone.
