Currently I have two roosters that are 12 weeks old and look as though they will exemplify the breed standards. Since next week I am heading to southwest Missouri to visit two of my sons and their families I am taking one with me. Havinfun has expressed a desire to have a rooster from my flock and since he is willing to make a 500 mile trip to improve his flock I will select the rooster that I feel is the best. It's really nice that someone is willing to make that kind of commitment to the breed. I'm really looking forward to meeting him.
That is going to be one seriously traveled rooster. First 750 miles from my house to my son's and then the final 250 from Missouri to Oklahoma City. I wonder if his new flock will consider him a handsome stranger.
I wanted one last opinion from you ladies. We were told this gal was a welsummer. I have been concerned that she is brown leghorn. She was bought from a guy that got the chicks from Ideal, so she would be hatchery quality (I just want dark eggs, so that doesnt matter to me). Her comb has not really started changing yet (she is 3-4 months old), my white leghorns have larger combs and pinker already.
If she is a leghorn, she is going to a friend, that has her coop almost built. If she is a welsummer, or still has the chance to be, we will keep her, or keep her until she starts laying white eggs lol. But if you guys say, oh yeah that is a leghorn, we will just give her away when we give the other chicks.
I paid more for her because she was supposed to be a welsummer. So I dont want to give her away and then find out she really was a wellie!
Here are pictures from today
Here she is in the group of chicks her age (see how the white leghorns comb is)

Sorry to say that she is a leghorn. Her and her flock mates sure are cute though. Love the second picture where they are all just chillaxin'. What are the chooks that have the poof on the head and white mottled? They are super cute!

They are brabanters. They are super sweet and have big dove eyes. I am really liking them.
