The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Robin, it's mostly because of the new law that WA State passed last year which made getting NPIP Certified cost-prohibitive. The new law now requires a fee of $85/hr and the clock starts from the time the vet gets in his car until he arrives back at his office. Given that Oly is 4 hours south of me, that's 8 hours plus another 2.5 hours of prep and testing time. The folks at the Dept. of Ag are trying to work around this by not charging for the commute time IF the vet has to be in the area for something else - like AIV testing.

So even if I didn't have to pay for the whole commute, I'm still looking at over $200. Can you imagine how much I'd have to charge or how many birds I'd have to ship just to make that up? Let alone if I had to fork out the whole $850-900!

Secondly, as you and some others know, I was separated for almost 3 years. So I was just doing everything I could do to keep this place afloat, take care of the birds and what needed to be done - "needed" is the operative word there, and try to work at a job that didn't make a dime in 2009 and hasn't made any money this year. God willing that will change on the 24th when I finally have a guy starting work. Anyways, now that the wife is home, I have some help around here and can devote some attention to things other than that which is just "needed" to be done.

Then lastly, I took a couple of years off from focusing on my Welsummers to devote some attention to the other breeds. Barnies and Buckeys mostly last year. Barnies and Ameraucanas mostly this year. I am quite pleased with the improvements I've experienced thus far. Especially with the Barnies.

Ah, but back to Wellies... I did hatch out a few Wellies this year. I've got three nice cockerels I'm watching now - wait, didn't I write all this already? I think so. Got a phone call & am distracted now. So let me just end by saying that I hope all are doing well with their Wellies. I'd like to encourage everyone working on the Welsummers to keep an eye on leg color. I'm seeing more and more Wellies showing up with VERY poor leg color. Almost white. In fact, I'm hearing and seeing more and more Wellies with white skin instead of yellow. Something to be on guard for too as yellow is recessive and very hard to get back once lost. Plus, how many folks actually even look at the skin color on their birds?

God Bless,

wow thats expensive.

In ny i just called them and they came out and tested my whole flock at no charge.

I don't understand why they are charging so much if they want people to have clean flocks.

Yes it is, Caroline. And the way your state does it is the way it should be for all states. I told the Dept. of Ag just such a thing and that is if they REALLY wanted to encourage people to get involved in the program and keep the state's birds clean and free from problems, then they'd encourage participation and not discourage it with these stupid laws and unnecessary expenses.

Which is another reason I forgot to mention as to why I won't be NPIP Certified now. It's a matter of principal.

I wish I could tell you that I don't understand why they do what they do but unfortunately I do. It's because it's WA State. Everything in this state from local, county, to state government is about taking your money. We have the worst fishing & hunting regs in the country I think. At least the worst I've ever seen. Why? So the WDFW folks can ticket you for everything under the sun. Don't believe me? How about a huge fine if you take a fish out of the water so that you can take a picture of it???!!!! No kiddin'! Then there's the extra 10 cent tax on every gallon of gas that we buy. Why? Because the people spoke in an election several years ago and said it cost the same amount of money to make a license plate for a 1966 Chevy Impala as it does for a brand new Hummer. So, less than two weeks after the new govenor took office, she passes the 10 cent new tax. Then there's the fact that traffic violations in WA were deemed to no longer be criminal offenses but rather civil offenses. The reason? Revenues! Now the State no longer has to prove you are guilty by a resonable doubt but rather only a 51% preponderance of the evidence. Before, if the cop didn't show up for the hearing, the charges were dismissed. Now? All the cop has to do is fill out a report. It's read by the judge and he then announces that the police are tasked with the responsibility of upholding and enforcing the laws of the state, he finds that you committed the offence, and therefore there is a preponderance of the evidence that you are guilty. Now to make you feel better Mr. WA State Citizen, I'll reduce your fine to half of what it was. Oh boy!

Anyways, I shouldn't have gotten started but now you know...

God Bless,

It's very similar here in CA Royce. Laws designed to make you depart with your money. A $20 cell phone ticket here will end up costing you $180 after all the fees they add on to it.

Robin~ I am sorry for the loss of Gretl. Please pass along condolensences to your dear daughter and please give her and you a hug for me.

I live under a rock....What is a cell phone ticket?

I believe that would be the ticket that you would get if talking on your cell phone while driving.

Yep. It's now illegal here to drive and talk on your cell phone unless it's hands free headset.

Are we still looking like welsummers at 2-1/2 weeks? Why does one have seemingly different feather type? One (Peaches) has much more white dappled in there than Penny. And their wings look a bit different. Hopefully the pics are good enough to see what I mean. I'm enjoying watching their changes. I'm kinda glad they aren't identical looking, otherwise the only way I'd know who is who is by sticking my hand in....Peaches jumps and perches on my hand.

Could their feather type be just hatchery different parents? or maybe mixed breeds.
