The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I had one of my Wellies sitting on the floor of the coop last night clucking away. I have been watching these girls for eggs and nothing yet. I scooped her up and put her in the nest. She sat there another 45 minutes clucking away. What do you think? Will I find an egg in the next few days? I tried asking her for one a while ago but she hasn't laid. LOL These girls are 27 weeks old. I know, they are not vending machines and "Patience Grasshopper" but I am one that likes to be in control and know what is going to happen when. LOL I'm sure they will lay when they are darn well ready. I checked the pelvic bone and all three are almost 2 fingers whereas my Gold Laced Polish is over 2 fingers without an egg.

I guess I just wanted to share my excitement that the one pullet was laying on the ground clucking away.

Okay...so 3 Wellie chicks hatched, 2 pullets and 1 cockerel. I did end up culling the 2 that did not absorb fully and weren't doing so hot, last night.

Very sad....but what's even more sad? I believe that my Odin boy probably won't be with us much longer unless he bounces back from whatever has grabbed hold of him right now.
Remember when I asked about the shrinking wattles....well the wattles stopped shrinking and they returned to normal color nice and red, he has been eating and drinking fine, pooh is fine and has been very active with the ladies until yesterday. Yesterday I noticed that he was just standing infront of the fence just shaking....shaking like he was cold. I moved him to sick bay and immediately gave him a shot of Tylan 50, just checked on him this morning and he doesn't look to be feeling any better. I will give him another shot this morning before I leave until tomorrow sometime. It's going to drive me crazy being away where I can't watch him or check on him and if he doesn't recover I think I shall cry bigtime.

Kelly........Moose better woooo the ladies nice in preparation for sending some hatching eggs up here sooner rather than later if Odin doesn't make it.

Usually the trick is that the pullets will have a nice line of eyeliner and a nice distinct "V" going from the top of the head back toward the neck and down. The males usually have a smudge of color next to the eye and their "V" is not so distinct.

I only have 24 hour old pullet for a photo to show what a girl looks like...hoping that someone has a cockerel photo.

I hope Odin pull thru but if he is going downhill pretty fast, then it would be much kinder to put him to sleep. Yep Moose will have to do put on his BEST studdy behavior for the girls to make more boys for you!

Thanks Ladies. I am very sad about it. My neighbor has agreed to come down and check on him today and also agreed to do the deed if he feels it is necessary, but I am hoping that my most awesome neighbor will find that he is feeling much better and will only have to give him another shot of Tylan or atleast find that he is no worse and not suffering.
I must be away today and possibly tomorrow helping with Ricks sister who has end stage cancer, her DH and youngest son could use a break and it just irritates the stuff out of me that her oldest daughter that is perfectly capable of helping doesn't even bother to lend a hand with anything.......can't get started.

A double sad day.
