I am going to get some more in the Spring.

hopefully the girls will cooperate and give me plenty of eggs in the spring so I have plenty of eggs and chicks to go around! Since they've been free ranging they are hiding them and I can't figure out where. New fence is supposed to be up by next week. The thing I have been impressed with from Nate's line is the uniformity of the birds. I truly can't tell my hens apart with the exception of the two that are second generation. I have noticed that the roos and hens filled out more after they turned 1. I was surprised as I thought they would have been fully grown before a year was up.

Ewesheep, do you have Barnies as well? Seems like a lot of us have both breeds. I wonder why that is? I was drawn to the eggs, pretty roos and the heritage factor of both breeds.

Congrats Royce and Erhard! I would have loved to see pictures too!

Fay - I was originally attracted to wellies on their egg color, then fell in love with the breed. I chose Barnevelders for different reasons: their lacing, mothering ability, that they are rare, felt I could help improve egg color, and lastly that they weren't a fad.

No I dont have any Barnvelders. I had some Bantam ones as beautiful they were but I was surprised at the egg color, it was tan!

Ameraucanas and EEs

That is all I am planning on having so far! I love the color of the Coro Sussex but they were known to be feed hogs!

OMG, did any of you see the episode of Man Up tonight! Its a funny sitcom - they decided to teach their daughter where food comes from by buying her a chicken - very cute!

Royce/Tailfeathers, can you pm my sis on facebook and let her know where you are in relation to Yakima Washington? she is looking for Wellie hatching eggs and maybe she should just get a few chicks from you in the spring!! Kathleen Kinkead, and thanks! (Bon Van Meter, Clyde Ohio)

BTW everyone, update on my massive Wellie breeding project from this year's getting eggs and chicks in from 7 different breeders. The fugate line hens all have black heads that ARE turning red, but still showing lots of black in the crest. They are younger and smaller so far than the rest of the flock.

I finally removed the 'roo' that was getting picked on so much in the roo coop. The crest has never grown in. Is it possible to get a hen with the roo feathering? I did have one of the hatchery stock hens color in as all red and now this one hasn't grown in the crest/wattles that the rest of the roos have, the roos were keeping it confined to the coop and not letting it range away in the yard, holds it's tail down, really, I am thinking this is a miscolored hen. So I brought it back home and put it in with the hens and am waiting to hear any crowing.

The last to hatch of the project did have 1/4 to 1/2 hatchery lines mixed in with Whitmore lines, so I'm thinking totally wrong feathering on this one!!

As for the eggs....There are 2 distinct types of eggs, one is more the Barneveldar type with the very fine speckling and very dark even terra cotta coloring or darker and the other is slightly lighter with the larger inkjet type spray of splotches.

The roos are all out at the farm and the hens are here at the house hiding their eggs on a daily basis. I'm up to 3 one day and 6 the next and increasing in egg numbers. Most of them are already up to nice larger sized eggs, a very few are smaller.

Yeah, I know, camera......photos. Kids home for break in another week!
