The Welsummer Thread!!!!

My welsummer/rir has gone broody and is one mean bird. She pecks anything that comes near. She is pecking my poor copper blue marran's comb. Making her bleed, so I have had to isolate my maran in another coop and run.

Yes I knew about the orange and yellow legs but thanks for bringing it up. It would be odd if we got a bunch of orange legs running around. Thankfully, I didn't have any in my flock or most of you. As far as I know, we are still on the very light yellow to medium yellow legs.

My bantams seems to have the best yellow legs around of all the Welsummers I've had.

My Welsummer laid her first egg last Saturday at 25 1/2 weeks old. These are her first 3 eggs. Then she skipped yesterday and laid today. She seems to have a pattern of speckled then dark brown because the one I got today was dark brown. They're still kind of small.

Very cute eggs...

Um... do you have more than one dark egg layer? I have seen eggs have a slight color change, but not a color and shape change. That middle egg does not belong to the two outer eggs. I suspect two hens are laying.

The only other girl I have who lays brown is an RSL who has been laying for a year and lays every day. Her eggs are extra large (these are medium) and she's laid every day in addition to whoever laid these three, so it can't be her. I have a Wyandotte who is getting ready to lay. Do you think the speckled eggs could be hers? I guess I won't know for sure until they lay on the same day! It's been 5 days and I've gotten 4 eggs. The fourth egg was dark like the second. I've never seen the Wyandotte in the box and she hasn't squatted for me yet or anything, but she is 6 months old. Hmmmm....

This is one of my 4 month old welsummer roosters

Good morning!!! I am new to Welsummers, so I am curious about your experience with their laying habits. For example, at what age did yours begin to lay?? We're they adequate layers??
Just curious, I can't wait to get some of the pretty eggs from my girls (2, 20 weeks). Thanks in advance!
