I bought mine at p.o.l and she was 24 weeks. She seems pretty hardy yet she been broody for the past month, she is also going throuh the moult so is not laying currently. I still can't believe that when my father held her upside down that she laid an egg! Of course I wasn't happy, but he really didn't know how to hold her! Maybe they like australia so feel more comfortable laying upside down... So mine could have started laying earlier? She lays small-medium size skin-brown eggs (like someone has fake tanned badly and they go orange coloured). Bare in mind mine is a welsummer/rir so her eggs colour has changed due to the cross.Good morning!!! I am new to Welsummers, so I am curious about your experience with their laying habits. For example, at what age did yours begin to lay?? We're they adequate layers??
Just curious, I can't wait to get some of the pretty eggs from my girls (2, 20 weeks). Thanks in advance!I
I actually saw her lay both colors. She laid two dark brown eggs in a row (one of which I witnessed) and then yesterday, I saw her lay another lighter speckled egg. The picture may be throwing you off since they are all the same shape and size. Only the color is different. So far she's a very good layer even though they're weighing in at 1.6 ozs. I thought they'd be a little bigger, but it's early yet.The only other girl I have who lays brown is an RSL who has been laying for a year and lays every day. Her eggs are extra large (these are medium) and she's laid every day in addition to whoever laid these three, so it can't be her. I have a Wyandotte who is getting ready to lay. Do you think the speckled eggs could be hers? I guess I won't know for sure until they lay on the same day! It's been 5 days and I've gotten 4 eggs. The fourth egg was dark like the second. I've never seen the Wyandotte in the box and she hasn't squatted for me yet or anything, but she is 6 months old. Hmmmm....

Well that is cool then - it does look like they are different shapes/sizes in the pictures. I do know some girls can go from dark to speckled, its called "cleaning their inkjets". I think they will get bigger, all of my pullets eggs have gotten bigger after they are laying awhile.
Any significant differences between brown leghorns & welsummers???? I have 2 or 3 of each and I can't tell them apart. I've looked at pictures of each and I can't find one
outstanding difference between the two. They are 9 weeks now, I guess I'll have to just wait until they start laying eggs!!! If anyone out there knows some way I could tell them
apart, I sure would appreciate it. Thanks!!![]()
leghorns have white earlobes and Welsummers have red - that's the most obvious difference
Where did you read or hear that? Curious because I know there are some of the egg laying breeds that will lay before the 20th week but everything I've read shows most of the Dual Purpose breeds start laying around the 24th week. None of my breeds have ever started to lay before the 23rd week. Also, most of what I've read on Chick Starter feed say to start adding 25% Layer Pellet in at the 20th week and continue adding 25% each week until 100% at the 24th week.
God Bless,
