The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I'm new to this thread (and chickens really) but here are a few pics of my Welsummers. I do have a question, does anyone know what a Welsummer rooster and Black Copper Maran hen cross would look like? Is the Maran gene stronger regardless of it is in the rooster or hen?

I have not done that cross exactly, but my experience is that the chicks come out looking more like their mothers when making crossbreeds. I crossed welsummer hen with a BLR wyandotte cock and got rosecombed welsummers with darker chests and underfluff, but they still have the markings of a welsummer.

Ok, so I think my wellie laid an egg today!! First one... But it's not dark brown :(. Does that mean she is mixed? Her body looks like a leghorn but no white ears

Found the perfect thread for me!!!!!!!!!!!

We've got two Welsummer hens, but also got some chicks from a friend about a month ago. Out of the bunch we have two cockerels and eight little pullets!

Our girls layer dark eggs right away, but I have read somewhere that their eggs can get a little darker with time. Maybe she's still just figuring it out

Thx!! I'm still not 100% sure it was her.... 1 of my BA's laid today but it was a much bigger egg and the color was a little lighter.... I'll be more watchful tomorrow!!

Dark egg layers, like Marans and I think Wellies also, lay darkest early in the egg cycle.
Often getting lighter as the cycle progresses.
After molting when the egg cycle starts back up again, they'll be darker again.
I don't know if they get darker the older the hen is or not.

Wilma's (I think) first egg! Surprised me as she's only 23wks, her comb has plumped a bit in the last week tho gained much color, but her pelvic points are 2+ fingers.
The other pullets in that pen are Lt Brahma's and EE's at 17wks...one EE I've had my eye on as her comb is plumping and her points are almost 2 fingers, which hadn't changed today.
36 gms, found in the run, not much color or speckles, kind of disappointing, but maybe that will change a bit with the next few? Will also have to catch her in the act to confirm it's her.
Now I can't find my egg chart! Will have to dig for it, but egg's not dark enough to make it compelling.

Yup, it was her. She found the nest today. Doesn't even register on the chart. Oh well, maybe next year I can get one from a better breeder.
Here's her first.

Here's the second. Lighter but more speckled. Disappointing, but still a nice addition to my coop and basket.
