The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Ok so I just figured out my advertised Ameracauna hen had some Welsummer traits and asked for verification. Got back two responses that said she was all Welsummer. Looked at a site about them and lo and behold the pic of the rooster looks just like mine (who was also purported to be Ameracauna, doh!) what do u all think?

They both look Welsummer to me, especially the roo who looks just like our two boys down to the yellow feet and legs. The hen's head and neck feathers look like ours do also. I can't tell clearly from the pics but does she have a single comb or a rose comb?

From what I see of a rose comb on the web, I'd say hers is a single comb. It is not flat and wide like I see rose to be. I blew up the pic so maybe you can tell better than me.

Ps she's brooding so she's all puffed up. Her eggs are typical for what I'm hearing about wellies. I tried to post an egg pic, but no go.

If she is laying brown eggs with darker brown speckles, then she's a Wellie

and she's broody?

I hope one of ours decides to go broody. Our two roosters are such sweet boys. Very mellow so far but they have just started to crow for us at 12 weeks so hopefully soon we will be getting some eggs. I picked up two more Wellie girls to add to our flock. Peanut and Pixie are younger than our main flock but growing fast. I don't think Peanut will ever be a big Welsummer hen but she is a cutie. I need to get some pictures of them posted along with the Speckled Sussex pullet that we got last week. So now we are up to 6 Welsummers, 1 Sussex and 8 Buff Orpingtons....but the Wellies are gaining fast, lol!

I hear a lot of people saying their Wellie Roos are sweet, but that has not been my experience. He goes after me if I go in the yard and fence fights me when I approach to gives treats over the fence. The only reason he still exists is because he does his job with the hens (protect and serve :) ). He is better with my co-owner as she lives there and he sees her more often, but he's getting uppity with her more too. The hen was my first ever broody and I put her on 4 of her own, 3 light green Ameracauna (?), and 3 Wyandotte eggs. Hoping for a decent hatch and more girls than boys! And also that she is as good a mother as she has been a sitter!!

My Wellie roo is cool too.

Rooster behavior often has more to do with the keepers behaviors...it takes some time after leaning about how chickens social order works.

I will say I didn't handle him much at all as a chick, only my cheek-tufty Ameracauna wanted to be held at all, and I don't know how my co-owner dealt with him as they are on her property, but I will tell you that he has had to protect his girls on several occasions so that may have lead to his feisty-ness. Like I said he lives because he's beautiful and he does his "protect and serve" thing with the girls well. He might be a tad over zealous on the serve thing as I only have 5 hens total and two are currently broody and a third is top hen and doesn't seem to get as much action foisted upon her. So those last two are frazzled, they need aprons fast!!

So this broody hatched out 9/10 with #10 potentially still viable. Dad is a Wellie and I put 4 of her own eggs under her (so they r pure) but the other 6 will be crossed. 3 Ameracauna (or maybe more EE) and 3 are SLW (maybe GLW too but I'm not sure she lays--lazy top hen!) Here are some pics.
Here she is giving me the stink eye.

And here's one of some more littles hanging out (getting squished?) next to her.

I would love to know if u all think I can sex them based on eyeliner and head V's or not since some are mixes and I'm not sure which, they all look like chipmunks that I can tell, LOL!!

Has anyone crossed a welsummer roo with either 1) Jersey Giant 2) Golden Comet or 3) Easter Egger? I have a welly roo that went out to my parents house and I am hatching eggs. I was wondering what the temperment/egg laying would be with the mix, and curious if the easter egger crosses would result in maybe in an olive egger? or light green?

Thanks!
