The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Got to be some reason more folks don't have Welsummers. Can't find a breeder around Alabama or adjoining states.
Bad layers in winter? Easy to get sick?
Hard to keep up? Trying to find out what before I get some.
Anyone selling them ready to turn loose? Don't want chicks, especially from anyone but a breeder since I want the dark, spotted eggs like a Maran, but more of them, larger too.
 Any help appreciated.
205-681-9245 to speak to me and give welcomed advice. John
Love these girls and roosters too. Healthy non aggressive yet independent. Laying a few weeks later than some breeds (average 24.5 weeks) Not sure if this helped but these are a good breed if the humans don't mess them up lol

IDK how far Thurmont, MD is from you, but Whitmore Farm has very nice Welsummers. They are much better than regular hatchery stock. You would need to pickup small orders like you are wanting.

You could also consider getting a box of 25 and selling the extras locally. There is usually quite a nice market for Welsummer chicks or started birds.
I'll check into that, thank you. Not sure how far it is but it's worth looking into :)

She did it..... My 7 month old welsummer laid her first egg.... But it was not dark.. I will take a picture tomorrow...it had dark spots though...hope it will change... What your experiences

I only have 1 Welsummer, her eggs are medium brown with beautiful dark specks all over, thats her egg on the front left :)

Did she ever have a dark eggor is that her egg all the time. Do u have marans? I can't wait to get my eggs from them in the spring and also I have easter eggers and ameraucana... Spring will be exciting this year

I have two young Welsummer hens. Both are laying, but egg spots seem to have disappeared...? One is smart and sweet, the other is quite a bit larger and a pecker. She also goes after one of my dogs, who've been taught not to touch the hens. She's going away. Is this a Welsummer characteristic?

Well it took me several weeks to surround my small 4 hen sized house with a 10x10x6 fence pen with ground and top wire. These are the 3 I just picked up.
Welsummer, amaricana and barred. They are my 3 stooges. Moe, Larry and curly will be determined once pecking order is established.
